    Hi All,

First time poster and not sure if this is the right topic forum however I was just wondering if anyone knows of anywhere that I can get some genuine free range eggs in Dublin. On a desperate search for months and can't find anywhere. I don't want to give up eggs forever but don't want to buy mass produced eggs from distressed and abused hens.

    Thank you!

I dont think we have free range eggs in Ireland at the minute...something to do with bird flu and the chickens need to be kept indoors

some info here (its about 6 mionths old but the newest that I can find)

    Hi neacy69,

That is no longer the case. The bird flu warning has been lifted so chickens are now allowed back outside. I know that lots of farmers who claim to be free range, barely follow the very minimum requirements to meet the free range classification. I was just hoping for a small farm or even a local person who has chickens! I love eggs!!

    Thanks for the reponse!

    Hi Lakill Farm,

That would be great, I would be looking for 12 a week! Would that be too small an amount?

    Thanks!

Perhaps try the Honest 2 Goodness market in Glasnevin every Saturday.

Aldi etc have Irish free range eggs. Is there a reason (of which I'm not aware) that you wouldn't purchase these?

Thanks I think I am going to try them. I am moving to an area close by so it might be fate haha.

I heard a few bad stories about supermarkets not really checking the conditions of the hens that produce their eggs and also male chicks being killed on mass and I would just like to try and buy from a smaller producer! Just to try and be on the safe side. Now, I do buy them from Aldi but would prefer not to.

Just so you know all organic eggs are free range (birds have to have access to outdoors at all times) and they are subject to annual inspections by both their certifying body and DAFM

hi, I do know that but the regulations are not good enough in my opinion. Nothing is done to protect the male chicks when they are born either.

As I said, I just want a small producer with a few hens that are kept in an open space and are not necessarily there just for commercial purposes.

    Thanks!

Well you may just keep a few hens of your own then cos you won't get the standards of birds your looking for.

That's mad, I am just in the middle of messaging them now. Thank you! I drive, would be only 20 mins for me.

I can't as I live in an apartment but my friend is getting some in the new year, might just have to wait until then!

What's your ideal outcome for the male chicks...

I heard there is a similar issue with male goats... we all love the milk and cheese.. but the meat not so much..Hence male kid goats are not in demand..

Might be a bit too far for you but Oldcourt Hill Farm in Firhouse do lovely eggs from free ranging hens. If you want to make the trip worth your while you could always rent an allotment from them :-)

Tim also takes surplus male goats from the dairy industry and raises them for meat. It's absolutely gorgeous and I've managed to convert most of my family. My mother steadfastedly refuses to even try it, much to my chagrin.
