Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

They didn't though, they took a lead before any real identity had been established and then tried to push the game forward to the Danes, even getting two good chances. We've just conceded our fourth a few minutes ago, the most we have conceded in a competitive game in over five years (which was our worst ever home loss when we tried to play open football against Germany).

I don't enjoy how we play, but it clearly is the only effective option because the talent literally just is not there. The ugly way we play is by far the best method of success for us (there's another team we both support that I'd love to see adapt to what is available like that! :p ). Sure there are sides like the Georgia game where we need to be putting the game to them (and Wes should probably be starting those games in my opinion), but the likes of Denmark are clearly just a lot more talented than us.

What would you change at grassroots level? Smaller pitches? No competitive football until you’re 15? More emphasis on passing? A formation used from u13 upwards?

All of that. And for LOI clubs to start selling their better players for mid six figure amounts rather than derisory sums.

That would then allow them to invest in their academies and youth infrastructure.

Also, every Youth Coach should have a UEFA B License minimum.

Hard to believe that we're now actually heading for minimum of a 20 year gap of qualifying for a World Cup.

All the talk after 2002 was to ensure we keep qualifying and it's all gone wrong since then.

Sad way to go out, but far too many errors and not enough quality to kill this game off. We invited pressure and made errors which killed us.Once Ireland have to chase a game we begin to show our limitations and have been picked off. You have to wonder what we are doing as a country to help build better footballers.

All those methods are good suggestions because it would get our lads used to playing both in spatial confinement and with a bit of freedom in terms of decision making

The culture of Irish football at present is to be adverse to a Wes type of player and be more results driven.

The McGeady substitution might be the most baffling one of MON's reign. Especially as it denied us the 2nd of our defensive midfielders.

Why did he go from one extreme to the other?

The two changes at ht really gave us no chance imo. Would have brought Wes on for Hendrick who has been anonymous and kept some bit of balance in midfield as the just just took over then.

Twenty years in which nothing has been invested into the sport whilst rugby has over taken soccer in the sporting pecking order and the gaa has invested heavily in every conceivable aspect of their games.

There's a reason why we've been talking about it for years on end.

The fact it gets more attention when we dont qualify is true but it's always there, even with a gloss of qualification. The lack of exciting prospects who we can really get behind is shocking..there's a dirth of players that have real ability or anything resembling technical ability at this level. Look at the options in our strike line and how reliant we are in players that are well into their 30's.

Weird as it sounds, getting absolutely hammered feels much more ok than going out on a 1-1.
Or it doesn't feel as painful anyway.
I suppose it helps to drag you into the acceptance stage of grief sooner.
At the very least it gives MON less of a place to hide.

Whatever about the result at this stage, I’ll happily shout for Denmark at the World Cup next summer. Great country, great fans and a really nice attacking team with a hugely entertaining number 10 driving them on.

They fully deserve the last European spot next summer, much better side all around tbh.

Granted, Denmark were better over the two legs. But 4-1 is not an accurate reflection of it.

They have Ice Hockey, and about 6% of our population. We have nearly as many soccer clubs in this country as they have players

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,860 ✭✭✭DeanAustin

And I don’t disagree with that but it’d take 10-15 years to bring results. Our fans won’t stick with something for that long without the same whinging and moaning. We’d also have to change our mentality on the game and there is no real will to do that.
