Troll Alert: Jonny May, English rugby player faster than Usain Bolt

    What absolute garbage.
May was in a state of shock after he recorded a personal best of 10.49 metres per second in a 40-metre speed test last Saturday, which would equate to a time of 9.53 seconds over 100 metres.
Ignoring of course the fact that the measurements can't be guaranteed reliable, a single metres-per-second measurement can't be extrapolated over 100m.

If you look at a similar analysis of Bolt's World record, you can see that May's "peak" of 10.49 metres per second was slower than 80% of Bolt's 100m run.

Using the same logic, Bolt's peak of 12.2 metres per second means he could run 100m in 8.167 seconds.

Ah it's been around Europe a lot longer than that. Sure Hector Bellerin (Arsenal) could set a WR in the 100m: http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/hector-bellerin-is-faster-than-sprint-king-usain-bolt-10175435.html.

There was similar rubbish recently in the Australian media about AFL players being sub 10 runners based off stupid calculations. This level of stupidity has made it to Europe in time for Christmas.

So he ran 40 meters at that speed, what about the other 60!!!!

And Ronaldo and Rommedahl before him could easily run sub 10 based on claims.

NFL players have also been doing similar for years as part of the combine

The other argument is bolt has been claiming for years he could play for Utd and wants to go into professional football. Every sport seems to try lift themselves up by dragging others down

Difference is, no track and field fan would believe for a second that Usain Bolt could make it as a professional footballer, while there would be SOME clueless people who follow other sports who would believe the garbage written about football, rugby, AFL players.

The headline is just clickbait and May himself never mentions being faster than a sprinter. That is still a decent time for a non specialist in fairness. Rugby teams seem to do alot of 40m testing, slight rolling start and 10m fly time at 30-40m.
You can get a decent 100m estimate from a 10m fly, max V is best predictor of 100m success. 10.49m/s = .953s/10m => 9.53s/100m and add a second for acceleration/deceleration, gives 10.53. Probably a bit slower as he wouldn't have same speed endurance or start as a sprinter. So 10.high maybe for Jonny, he probably should be compared to Dafne or Thompson. The time ties back to this article where he talks about his speed training and athletics background.

The fastest rugby players are about 10.high to 11.low, which is good considering the other conditioning they have to do in their sport. There is a video on youtube of the AFL/rugby lads racing 100m, 11.low won that.

To be fair, many elite sprinters have played in the NFL. The trouble comes when people try to extrapolate from 40 times which are timed one way to 100 times which are timed a different way.

I think you find a good few sprinters have switched to NFL to make money
Gemili was league two footballer and then switched to sprinting as didn't make it as a footballer.
Okoye went from discus to american football.
James Jett won an olympic gold in 4x100m, ran in a heat and also played NFL the same season I think

Problem with combine times from the NFL are that the clock only starts when the player moves, so reaction times are not a factor. Also it is hand timed, so not really comparable to track times.

There some fast NFL players though. Marquise Goodwin was a good long jumper and Javhid Best ran the 100m in Rio (but didn't make it past the preliminary round).

Chris Johnson ran the 40 in the NFL combine in 4.4 seconds. His 100m time from college was 10.66

Jamaal Charles ran 10.27 for 100m in college. Robert Griffin ran 400 H in college to a good standard also, 49.22

Probably plenty of other examples out there.

There is a good few track sprinters that made the switch for money reasons, which is understandable when you see the amount of money on offer

Less chance of brain damage from a track and field career though.

Ironically if memory serves me correct the likes of Jeff Demps and Gatlin had relatively average combine results compared to some at the top of the NFL with regards their times sprints

For sure, they know they have a problem, so they just roll with it instead of fighting it:eek:

Not saying this is the right thing to do

After the disaster on Tuesday various football ****es were coming up with lists of future stars of Irish kickball in the sky-

This guy was mentioned a few times

Khius Metz - a speedster, beat Darren Campbell 200m schools record. Can't find him on any UK records (the 200m u15 was beaten in 2017). It could be a Manchester schools though. No Mention of a time either.

This is in the hapenny place compared to Parkrun discussion group who believe some fella ran 12.17 at a parkrun in England running with his dog.

In fairness to May I saw an interview with him before the Eng v Aus match on Saturday and he dismissed these claims out of hand for what they were.
