    Hey,

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good plugin for tuning, - especially for drums. I'm using Ableton and know how to do it with the spectrum analyzer and just pitching up an down, - but spotting the right key on the analyzer can be a tiny bit hit and miss sometimes. I'm thinking of getting this: https://www.waves.com/plugins/torque but wondering if it might be a waste of money.

Also, do people tend to tune all drums, percussion, sweeps, hits etc.? - wondering if going too far might make things a little too sanitized.

    Thanks,
    Alan

Personally I don't do much tuning of drums. A little pitch tweak but that's about it.

Yeah, seems to be something that can do more harm than good, if not careful at least. Going to give this Torque plugin a quick demo and will see, seems to get good reviews

I tend to do it by ear. But if i'm stuck I have a chart← on my desktop that displays frequencies/oct and would use an EQ peak to resonate the frequency it should be then fine tune the sample to hit the max resonance.

There are many free VST's that will display frequency as note off the top of my head Vexengo Span, Melda Production MAnalyzer. Lots of paid for too. BlueCatAudio have a free version of the analyser but it does not display frequency or note the Pro version does. I Have the multi version which pretty good.

Another paid option would be FabFilter Pro Q2 expensive but well worth it imo! It has a tuned EQ mode with piano roll as before high Q EQ on the tune should help tune instruments to resonate on the correct frequency. Which is what the TORQUE plug in looks like it is doing. So I'd hang onto that few quid if I were you, you can do what it does easily with any parametric EQ if you are just looking to tune.

Thanks for that, FabFilter Pro Q2 looks seriously cool, - definitely on my demo list, - not just for this tuning problem. Have a few things next on my plugins list (anyone using Cableguys stuff btw??), - though trying to avoid going all out on plugins generally.
So, I tried the demo of Torque, - and tuned all the drums on my current project with it. I had also done the same using the Ableton Spectrum and ableton pitch shifting. It actually does little more than Ableton Spectrum or Voxebgo would in terms of finding the key from the peak, you still have to figure out the most"formant peak" yourself - Ableton's Spectrum will pretty give you the same. It's very obvious sometimes, not quite so obvious other times, . The results with Torque's tuning though were definitely much more pleasant and natural IMO than Ableton's "overall" pitch shifting, It tunes the formant peak and to then to a lesser extent the upper harmonics (based on whatever algorithm its using). It's basically does tuning on band passes from what I can make out, - pretty much what I think you are saying can be done with FabFilter, if I understand it correctly.
I've no doubt it can all be done with the right EQ, time and knowledge, - but I think at the 29 bucks "special price" (ie. Waves "most of the time" price) it's not unreasonable. Might just download a demo of FabFilter and have a play tonight.

Have Waves improved their licensing any bit. I had a suite of the One Knob plugins but it kept losing the licence information. Very annoying. Luckily I'd got them at a knock down price.

That's the catch with waves if you spend more than €29 on any one plug-in you're doing it wrong. They have flash sales all the time on the not so good stuff still waiting on their bus compressor to go on sale... Its only available in one of their packs never seen it as stand alone so will probably be left waiting.

Only have one of their plugs myself and it was free but don't have any issues with that.

No major problems. I updated their Waves Central software manager alright and had to copy an updated "uber" vst dll to pick up the newly installed plugins, - a little messing involved. But generally it's been working fine.

BTW, picked this up last week, going cheap at the moment (9 quid) as it is just launched, - looks very interesting to the likes of myself at least (relative newbie) even as a learning tool, but might be interesting to others too, and the price is good right now...

Yeah, I was very tempted by that Izotope stuff but had already shelled out a fair bit on waves Puigtec and Kramer bundles and a few other bits
