Touchscreen hack for a tablet (reckon this is a better place to ask)

Not strictly a "PC Building" query, but I reckon you guys will be better placed to answer a tablet hardware question.

Simple problem: the LCD screen is cracked. Big problem: the tablet manufacturer (Archos) doesen't supply spare parts, and seems to have done a great job in purging them from on-line merchants. Are tablet screens typically very specific to the device, or should I be able to find another that'll do the job?

It wasn't an expensive purchase, and I hadn't used it that much until my last work trip when I thought "ah, if only I had the tablet now" ... about five times a day! :pac:

It's still otherwise in perfect working order (with OTG inputs and HDMI output) so if there was any way to find a compatible replacement screen, I'd like to give it a shot.

(Archos 101e Neon, screen reference H101H140-L-V2, like this one)

It says under the pics that that screen is compatible with the 101E so it should be sound, if you were worried though I'd crack open the one you have and take a look at the LCD. If it's fused to the glass, you're probably out of luck.

If not, see if the cables match the pics in the link.

Generally they're specific, lengths and fittings differ between models, nevermind manufacturers.

Thanks for the reply. The pic is the one and only source that I found after I'd taken it apart - I used the reference printed on the cable to search for suppliers - but it's marked "out of stock".

I spoke to Archos technical services during the week and they said "we don't supply spare parts, ever" - which is what every repair shop has told me - so I don't know where those guys got that one from ... but it's obviously not available any more. :(

At this stage, I'm not looking for a perfect fit, just something that'll display the image that's smaller than a regular PC monitor with 220V power supply! :D

That 40 pin cable isnt something I recognise. Can definitely find 1024x600 TFT panels but they'll be EDP or other. Getting the right interface might be nigh on impossible.

Buy another 101e that has a fine display but dead something else?

Yeah, thought about that. Unfortunately, the only "for parts" machines on offer on France's main "old junk" marketplace all have cracked screens!

Archos said they'll give me a voucher for 25% off anything on their site if I send the broken one back to them, which is generous ... but ... just feels wrong!

But if these panels are really that specialised, then I suppose it's either that or donate it to a hackerspace. :(
