Are there any garments that add a layer of warmth but don't restrict running during racing? (specifically racing, not training)

Supposed to be a cold one for the underage nationals this weekend

Sure, base layers. But if they add a layer of warmth, then you (or your kid) will probably be too warm halfway around. Better to have layers on top and remove them as late as possible before the race starts.

Often start with gloves and a hat in xc races .Easy throw off . probably want a good warm up with a few hard strides so reasonably warm starting off also if v cold weather.

Theres a good few warmups out there however i see clubs all warming up together at uunderage level at meets when there could be an hour of a time difference between races for the different runners. Whats the recommended there before your race?

Ideally, warm up as though yours was the only race. The same warm up that the kids would normally do at the start of a session.

But that isn't really possible. Kids have to be there a long time before their race, you have to keep them together and keep them loose. Kids arrive in time for younger siblings to race and then are hanging around. Also, you have to leave time in between the warm-up and the race for the kids to do all the things they should have already done :pac:

If you have to warm-up early, you have to strike a balance between light jogging, occasional strides, and rest, and the balance is different for everyone.

15-20 min jog 40 mins before, some light stretches drills for 5 mins , some hard strides before the off, the rest is getting ready, spikes, throwing gear , chatting etc..
