Actually after partition the boundary commission had advised parts of East Donegal should have been in NI and places like South Armagh, South Down, parts of Derry, Tyrone, Fermanagh should be in the Free State.

And I’d say the Brits really regret not getting shot of south Armagh.

    (Pun intended).

He has put an idea in my head. The 26 counties should vote to rejoin the 6 counties within the UK.

Then immediately look for an independence vote for the entire island to leave the UK.

United Ireland achieved by the dilution of the unionist vote across the 32 counties.

    Tried that. Back in 1918.

All told, didn't really work out great.

Taylor is smarter than that. He has a history of being a maverick and, despite being shot by the IRA and being deeply unionist, he often went against the mainstream.

What does Donegal have that he wants though? Surely not all the SF voters...

Donegal is the Alaska of Ireland, we should have our own separate state. We could become a tax haven like Isle of Man, or Liechtenstein.

Ah, the 'he was just trolling' story.

Which would be fine if this man had ever displayed a sense of humour in the past.
He is just a slightly more desperate version of Arlene.

Neither did Derry but gerrymandering fixed that.

    True...

But given the demographics today, I would say there is more of a chance Derrry would leave NI and join the State.

If every one of the 6 counties where allowed to vote to either say a part of NI or Join the State what do you think the out-come of that would be?

If you asked me this 2 years ago, I'd have said none, including Derry. Now not so sure. Derry and Fermanagh maybe.

Casinos, Chicken ranches, legalise them all?

If it annoys nationalists then it's working, so fair play to him.

Yeah I would agree with that.
Same I think could be said for the Scottish referendum.

I think the 'annoyed' person here was Taylor.

Akin to the pathetic annoyed sniping of Arlene, who has nothing better to offer in her desperation.

Yep, the Goats Don't Shave had that idea 25 years ago

No, I quite enjoy seeing the desperation of the unionist position expressed on the net. Especially when there may be alcohol (the mispelling) involved. It's why I am friends with Wullie Frazer on FB. Endless entertainment tbh.

Possibly but some of the responses on the thread aren't. Some people get rubbed up the wrong way far too easily these days. Speaking of comedy, I'm off to watch the goals that Liverpool conceded last night.

I'm from North Donegal and working in Dublin. I'm not looking forward to producing my passport twice to drive home.

Always very measured in their responses, as far as I am concerned.

Are you saying that it is better or quicker for you to use the NI roads to get home than those in the RoI? Also, on a serious note how long is your commute?

You could drive around in protest :pac:

I heard him on Newstalk this morning, not a very convincing argument.

Basically, because the population of Donegal has halved since partition and NI's has increased then Donegal would have been better off in NI.

If the poster above has to drive through NI to get home from Dublin then they may well be better off being part of NI. What is up with the roads in Donegal?

We could do a swop: Donegal for Norfolk.

Northumberland, but you have to add in Leitrim.

Of course. Driving via Sligo would add an extra hour. Commute is 3 and a half hours. In fairness I don't go home that often!

    Antibiotics and a weeks rest.

Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

The map you use has the ROI cut out of it, doesn't it :p

There is no chance in hell that Donegal would consider being part of the UK. That said however, certainly from an infrastructural point of view, Donegal has been badly neglected by this state which is a shame because its a beautiful county im sure.

Donegal will suffer if a hard border comes in big time.

The disadvantages: the EU agriculture grants which will be lost, having to be in with the DUP, what a Brexit fall-out in trade will have on the UK's willingness to keep giving this money and incresing it to cover Donegal.

They're all against the A5 because they don't want Free Staters driving on roads through staunch Ulster farmland.

The RoI residents have to use the NI roads because the infrastructure isn't available on their side of the border by the sounds of it.

Ever hear the old saying 'The shortest distance between two points is...'

    Just wondering.

So nothing to do with the extra 50KM that avoiding the north adds to the journey?

I think Berserker is referring to the absence of a road bridge built over the UK's territorial air space - up to 30 KMs might do - connecting Dublin to Donegal. Bit remiss of us really.

    Twice? That's a disgrace.

I mean we need more immigration Guards in Dublin stopping these Donegal people on the streets and at checkpoints every day and checking their papers.

I've heard this quote from Taylor banded about today about the population of Donegal halved since Partition - complete rubbish, nobody bother challenging him on this. Figure in 1911 was 168,537, fell every census till 1971 where it was down to 108,549, has rebounded since to 159,192 in 2016 albeit it was 161,137 in 2011.

So he wants Donegal to be part of Ulster.

The roads on the Donegal side are a lot better than the shambles between Derry and Strabane. They just have to take a longer route because of the border.

I wouldn't say there's to many republican landowners in that stretch. I suppose all those kerbs are painted for a French fête?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,942 ✭✭✭topper75

ha ha you don't want to breaking down on that stretch!

While John is having fun I'd like to counter with Dál Riada rejoining Éire - the area did so well under Somhairle Buí McDómhnaill.
