Fingal councillor opposes flying Irish tricolour above county hall, saying it could offend foreign nationals

Solidarity-People Before Profits Cllr Matthew Waine has suggested not flying the flag but suggested flying the red flag of Marxism & socialism instead

Firstly I'm sorry, if you come to Ireland & you feel offended by our national flag then feel free to leave, we should not make the same mistakes as the UK & its usually not even the foreign nationals complaining but some idiot like this Cllr

Secondly why the hell would we fly a flag of an ideology that killed more people than the Nazi's? Why not go the whole hog & stick the ISIS flag up there

What do people think of this?

I think its more to do with his own agenda than to do with foreign nationals. We cant keep making the same mistakes as the UK has made. They are fcuked because of all this crap

I've never met a foreigner offended by the Irish flag. Who are you shouting at? Calm down for **** sake.

Some gob****e councillor talks ****e (probably just to put his flag up there instead) and it's still the foreigners that get the abuse.

What would be the difference between flying the red flag & the Nazi flag? Both have killed millions but for some reason the red flag gets a pass

People come and stay in Ireland because they like Ireland. These AAA-PBP folks are just trying to divide us.

I think every council in Ireland must have one gob****e councillor that makes the news at some point with a mad statement - probably for the purpose of making the news.

Apart from Kerry...they send theirs to Leinster House.

He actually only got 435 votes in the last local election and failed to be elected.

He was co-opted onto the council as Ruth Coppingers replacement (why am I not surprised) when she got elected to the Dail

he's an absolute idiot - wanting to fly the flag that many of the immigrants would ACTUALLY find intimidating, having lived and suffered under it for decades.

These champagne socialists are a stain on actual socialist ideas.

    That’s absolutely ridiculous.
The Irish flag has, thankfully, not been hijacked as a symbol of right wing extremist or ultra nationalists. It's a positive, open, friendly, symbol of Ireland.

It's also a symbol of a republic that defines citizenship in the modern sense and not by some blood right. If you're Irish, be it by birth, or by naturalisation, you’re Irish and that flag represents all of us who have an attachment to this wind swept, rainy island in the North Atlantic!

Even the symbolism behind it is about peace between green and orange.

The very suggestion that the flag is offensive to minorities is weirdly trying to paint it as being somehow a symbol oppression or ultra nationalism. It absolutely is not and I'm offended by the suggestion!

    It's an utterly ridiculous suggestion.

As for flying the red flag. Why?
It's not representative of Ireland or the council he stands for! It's not less ridiculous that someone suggesting the council fly the US flag or the British flag.

    Absolute, complete and utter nonsense!

He's nothing more than a Student Union Socialist who maybe spent a few weeks in sunny Cuba and thinks it's a bastion of prosperity.Without seeing the real poverty and real suffering of the people there

I have as much respect for these type of bellends as I do for bellends like Richard Spencer and his ilk on the Far Right.

    None whatsoever.

As a proud Irishman & Fingallian I would respectfully suggest that the councillor refrain from assuming what may or may not offend foreigners, & shove his socialist flag where the sun don't shine. Gobsh1tery of the highest order!

    Thank god common sense prevailed.
I think the Irish Flag needs to be flown with pride from each and every government or council building around the country. And anyone who takes offence to it can just fcuk right off.

My guess if foreign nationals would be alarmed to see the red flag of Marxism flown in Fingal.
Some had real experience of socialism, unlike that fool.

I didnt know flags actually killed people

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    they cant help themselves
I went on several water protest marches and the socialists were there . The day was about water but they were trying to canvas new members (ok) , trying to get people to sign a petition against racism (not the day for it) , and then collecting money for their party - I think this was pre AAA (not on)

I saw a family beside me being badgered for a donation to the party because the kid asked the socialist gang at the side of the road for a banner to wave about..the kid was about 5.
    It was cringe stuff....

their unwavering belief in dogma mean they can't do politics and they also can't focus on the task at hand.,

    Laos

As for the red flag, I can't imagine too many from eastern and central Europe being overly assured by the sight of it.
