Just came across this, An Olympic style event that takes place over two weeks including a multitude of sports like swimming, boxing and athletics. Apparently this will be the second holding of it after debuting in 2015 much like 4 year Olympic cycle, I'd never heard of it before.

Looks like the IAAF are making a push to promote it and using a new format for the 5 day athletics schedule which will be a knockout affair with all the events taking place in a two hour window each day. I'm not clear on the details of how that will work, Anyone have an idea?

Looks like the middle and long distance events are getting the cold shoulder as it is mostly based around sprints and the field events.

Any thoughts on the format and will it be able to draw in top athletes when clashing with the World Championships only a couple of weeks later?

This one in Minsk, first one in Baku, Pat Hickey was a big fan. None of the major nations took part in the athletics programme first time around.

That’s because the athletics programme was simply the third or fourth tier of the European Team Championships, so the bigger nations weren’t eligible to compete.

European Games are mid June, World Championships are end of September, start of October, so it’s more like 3 and a half months later, not a couple of weeks.

Whole thing sounds a bit gimmicky but no harm as long as they don’t get any ideas to turn the World Championships into this nonsense in the future.

Not sure the purpose of European Games when there’s multi sport Euro Champs next year.
