Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Argentina in more danger of conceding before HT

Iceland the better team towards the end of the half. I fancy the Argentine bench to win it though, too much quality there not to make a difference.

Salvio needs to come out for Banega. Meza and Di Maria need to try harder on the bands to try to start loading the defenders with cards.

I think Argentina need Dybala on, if they keep marking Messi as they have he'll find himself getting space and if he gets that he'll cause lots of problems for Iceland.
It'll end up with Messi getting some space too I think.

Ronnie Whelan and Get Canning must be two of the worst commentators in soccer.

Canning can’t shake the GAA off himself in commentary. He should stick to that.
    Ronnie should stick to retirement.

    Ronnie should stick to retirement.

There is an upside to this as a GAA fan, he won’t be commentating on our matches for a month.

I don’t mind him too much in GAA to be honest. I think I remember him calling a sideline ball in the last World Cup.

Hold on. George Hamilton is commentating

Passing is too slow, it's just not crisp enough and the amount of players who kill the ball and turn is a problem for Argentina.

A moment of magic from Aguero is all they have to this point. They certainly have the attacking quality to be dangerous against any team but they are never going to get the best out of them with their slow build up play.

He really messied up that penalty.

I had a feeling Messi would miss. He seemed kind of nervous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,507 ✭✭✭✭castletownman

George Hamilton would want to calm down a bit. The Icelandic goalie didn't pull off the "impossible". Messi's penalty success rate is probably the weakest aspect of his game. And it was struck in a way that made it easier to save.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,349 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

    Justice there, never a penalty.

It's not like George to exaggerate, is it?

So bad at Penalties. Knew he would miss.

Backed him AT as well. Stomach turning.

Not sure I get the whole first movement/second movement thing. Looked to me like the Oz player slid in, got a tiny touch on the ball, and momentum took him into the French player. So no peno imo.

You are correct. The defender made no contact with Griezmann whatsoever albeit it may have appeared otherwise. Is the VAR not employed in situations like this? This type of blatant cheating looks set to feature regularly yet again at a major tournament.

Also the way he said "the goalkeeper who plays in Denmark" as if it was "who plays for Longford Town."

I'm flicking back and forth between this and "The Last Battle of the Vikings" on PBS, pretty sure Bjarnason appears in both.:P

Seriously? That’s as blatant a penalty as you’ll see.

That should have been another penalty.

Clear penalty. Why didn't the ref consult VAR?

Nailed on penalty , Happy they didn't get it though

Gonna be an awful lot of penalty talk in this tournament.

VAR farce continues not overturning that on Pavon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,496 ✭✭✭Will I Am Not

Maybe Messi told him not to give it?

Gonna be an awful lot of penalty talk in this tournament.

If a penalty is given its wrong and VAR should have been used.

If a penalty is not given its wrong and VAR should have been used.

    Seems how it goes.

Me too but I've such rose tinted glasses on when it comes to Iceland they could knife an Argentina player and I would say play on :D

    Messi trying too hard?

They've defended immensely , It wouldn't be fair for them to lose to a penalty , Could see them doing something in the other 2 games aswell

That’s what the referee must have been thinking.

How's it a farce? Correct decision was given earlier and It's at the referees discretion to consult var as he chooses which he didn't this time. That should have been a penalty but that was officials decision.

It's supposed to be about getting decisions correct, not whether the referee is prepared to use it.

Argentina's tactic of giving it to messi every time reminds me what it was like in the school yard when you just give it to the best player on your team and hope they produce some magic.

    No plan B or C
