Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Uruguay just didn't seem bothered to push on and go for goals ,they will need to beat Russia now to top the group.

Would've taken a monster win to catch Russia in fairness...

Umtiti against roma was laughable. Van djik is better than pique imo too. Ramos is top notch.

That Mark Poogash or whatever his name is is an insufferable pain in the hole.

The standard of refereeing is incredibly annoying each game is full of shítty fouls as the players know they won't get yellows.
Innocuous tackles are one thing but one of the Spanish lads got killed in the corner there and nothing.

While we're making random observations, there seems to be a lot of players from 'Muslim' countries not sporting proper beards in this World Cup. Maybe elite sportsmen get special permission to shave...

Trying to imagine how Iran vs Uruguay would go.

The Ireland Iran game in 2001 had a similar type of "vuvuzuela" sound going on. Albeit to a lesser extent.

Is it just me or does the Spainish kit look a bit like a set of pajamas?

Or it could be just the game making my eyes heavy.

Why would you enjoy going to a World Cup match and spend 90 minutes blowing into a plastic trumpet?

Brings back awful memories of 2010.

How would you expect Iran to play against Spain in all fairness.

Defending is part of the game as well.

I know but jesus it's boring as ****. Sure if Spain score all the defending was a waste of time cause they have nothing going forward.

It's the Iranian supporters blowing the Vuvuzelas. Got a shot of them in the crowd. They'll probably have some Khlav Kalash at halftime, washed down with a couple of cans of Crab Juice before resuming their incessant noise.

Defend when you have something to defend though. I mean only for the lucky win they got in first game they be defending to bring them selves to two points which wouldn't be good enough to get anywhere anyway.

Fascinating half - Spain haven't managed a proper chance. Their increasing frustration may be their undoing, though Iran need to establish the barricades again for the first 15 mins of the second half.

Iran have every right to play in a way to get the best result they can. It'd be great if all teams had equal talented players so only brilliant football itself could separate them but that's not reality. Spain would probably already be a few ahead if Iran had opened up to play them.

    International football, maybe.

One thing that becomes clearer with each tournament is that the club games is on a different planet in terms of quality and the gap is growing larger.

You'd wonder at this stage if a Championship team joined the world cup would they be able to dog it out because they actually have some sort of cohesion.

It's still nice to have the event though.

Ah, come on out of that! What a load of nonsense!

Do you honestly think Iran should be playing offensive football in this game! Against some of the worlds best players!

What is the point of them attacking with less caution and leaving themselves open to a counter!

In fact do you think they are capable of it!

It is clear their tactics are to hold out, frustrate the opponents and try to get half a chance.

Nonsense - exceptional defending and approaches like this when outmatched has been a fundamental part of the game for over half a century.

But they do have something to defend, if they hold on they'll be on 4 points and in a good position. Obviously if they concede they'll be forced to come out. If they tried to play football against Spain they'd be annihilated.

Of course they have something to defend.

They are defending a clean sheet against Spain and a point.

Also, you are incorrect about their 2 points as they beat Morocco in the first game so a draw would put then on 4 points against Spain 2.

Means they would go through if they do the same against Portugal.

It's completely understandable how they are playing against one of the world's best sides.

I'm aware of all of this doesn't change the fact its ****ing horrible to watch and boring as ****. Imagine most the teams where doing it? We wouldn't be watching would we!

It will win them nothing anyway. What's worse is seeing Uruguay doing it when they actually have some top level players.

If they got to the second round it would be a momentous victory for them. And Uruguay were far from like this earlier. Your posting is as impotent as Spain's attack in the first half tbh! :pac:

Really? That's why the sport is bigger than ever?

A smaller team is allowed to defend against a bigger team.

Also, Italy have played defensive football for years and achieved great success with it whilst never been boring.

Interested to see if Iran can keep this up, but overall this has been the least entertaining day of the tournament by far.

With any luck at least one of the games tomorrow will be a cracker. They all look good on paper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,740 ✭✭✭✭MD1990

    My post was a joke.

Iran's tactics are fine they are doing well but need to counter better.

Boring day of games so far though

Uruguay could of went for blood today they got an early goal but was clear just weren't bothered they where happy to defend. They had the players to get few today Iran obviously don't and I'm aware of that.

I give up. You don't seem to have a clue! This isn't FIFA, it is a world cup match between an Iranian team against the worlds best players.

I am shocked that anyone with a footballing brain, however small, would have expected something different or even criticise Iran for their approach.

    Almost would be.

Iran would be on 6 and Portugal on 4 as opposed to 1 point for Spain.

I wonder what the odds of 0-0 would be for Iran v Portugal in the last round?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,559 ✭✭✭✭yabadabado

You have to admire Iran. They have a game plan and it's not pretty but **** me they are dogged.
Spain probably will beat them but no harm seeing lesser team but it up to the big guns.
