Fantastic race, well organised, great support. Genuinely think this is the best race of the year (I’m perhaps biased as I’m a local), but route is great, goodie bag fantastic as per usual, and genuinely friendly group of runners. Roll on 2019!!!

I'll echo all that. A really excellently well run and supported race. I couldn't find a fault at all. Really looking forward to Bohermeen now. I think it has a similarly good reputation.

My Garmin had it at 4.95 and I didnt cut any corners. Anybody else find it short?

The hairpin turn usually plays havoc with GPS. Same in the Clontarf 10 mile in April.

Mine was 4.95, but I agree, the 4 mile marker (after the hairpin) was the first marker my watch went out of sync with. It still threw me a bit though, for some reason I got it in my head that the next mile would be longer. Crazy logic :o

Having walkers start 20 minutes ahead of runners is a good idea, if only all the walkers did actually do that.

Annoys me when people want to walk it, but start towards the front of runners group. I'm know mo farah, but know where I should be starting

Garmins and GPS watches just aren't accurate enough to measure a course correctly down to the metre, even without trees and turns affecting it.

AAI approved races (and all races worth their salt) aren't measured with GPS - they're measured on the ground with a device called a Jones counter fitted to a bicycle wheel.

I'm not trying to have a go at the OP here, or diss anyone's watch, but it's unfair on race organisers if people say a course is short/long just because their GPS says so.

(DOI: My club also has an annual race: haven't heard any complaints about short/long course but as I'm often a pacer I'm mindful of runners being over-reliant on GPS)

Accept the jones counter argument. Whatever about gps, stryd foot pod and Garmin both have it marginally short.

    Stryd data (extremely reliable)

Lap Power Time Distance Pace Form Power Leg Spring RSS
    1 259 watts 04:18 1000 meters 4:17/km 63.8 watts 9.9 kN/m 8
    2 273 watts 04:11 1000 meters 4:12/km 64.5 watts 9.9 kN/m 9
    3 271 watts 04:18 1000 meters 4:17/km 63.7 watts 9.8 kN/m 9
    4 263 watts 04:04 1000 meters 4:00/km 65.1 watts 10.0 kN/m 8
    5 276 watts 04:09 1000 meters 4:05/km 63.8 watts 9.6 kN/m 9
    6 269 watts 04:08 1000 meters 4:05/km 64.0 watts 9.7 kN/m 9
    7 275 watts 04:13 1000 meters 4:12/km 63.9 watts 9.8 kN/m 10
    8 288 watts 03:54 995 meters 3:53/km 63.5 watts 9.7 kN/m 10

    5 miles is about 8.05k

While stryd is usually more accurate than GPS watches it still has a margin of error when cadence and other movements come into play. Jones Counter calibration and measurement is the gold standard of measurement.

I have on good authority that the course was Jones Counter measured the week before...
