Which lens (as gift) for Nikon d5300

I managed to get the Nikon d5300 in that crazy argos price during summer and decided to keep as Xmas gift to myself replacing my canon 450d

Now my other half offers an additional lens as a gift for xmas , but as I've not even opened the camera I have no diea of what would be a good 2nd lens

I was looking at the Tamron AF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2 Nikon+Motor a while back

could some one recommend this - or suggest any other

also if it was worth it to get nikon/nikkor rather than tamron/sigma I'd contribute to the price

You will see lots of advice elsewhere, bottom line buy the best you can afford. Depending on money to be spent consider Nikon 35mm or 50mm prime, cheap and super sharp. A bit more maybe 18 - 140mm Nikon, kit lens supplied with 7000 series camera. You probably have 18-55mm with camera, so consider 55-300mm Nikon. I advise against a one size does all lens at first until you know what you want with your photography. Also suggest a basic photography course.

+1 for the 35MM f1.8. Great piece of glass, and not too expensive at around the €200 mark.

I was thinking of this one, reasonab;e enough price ( don't want to be too greedy on a gift)

and seems useful for travel (which is what we do mostly)

Good lens with plenty of zoom, 18-300 mm is worth the extra if it can be afforded.

i know it depends on your style of photography, but i generally would not use a long lens much while travelling.
300mm has huge reach and may not have that much use (caveats being sports photography or nature photography).

Was recently on holiday and the limited zoom of the 18-55mm lens became apparent.

What do people think? I'd rather stay with the Nikon brand if possible. Any one ever deal with eglobal or recommend a bricks and mortar shop in Dublin or Galway.

Both of those are cheap in comparison to other outlets. You might want to read the trustpilot reviews about that website. They don't come out very well
