    Hi

I decided to visit a doctor a few months back (my brother has Crohn's disease so I felt it was important to get checked out) over experiencing problems with my stomach such as gas, constipation, abdominal pain with a very small amount of bleeding in one instance. I had to give a stool sample, in which he then sent me forward for a endoscopy and colonoscopy (I have the appointment to see a specialist next week) so why I am seeing a specialist? I was under the impression that I was going for a endoscopy and colonoscopy. Why am I seeing a specialist first? Is this normal protocol before a e and c? I'm sorry for my ignorance - I have never had this done before.

However, I feel in the meantime the problems are becoming worse. I have a nagging pain in my sides - predominantly the right side now for the last few days.

    Thanks for your help.

Have you had your appendix checked? Right side pain isn’t good.

If you are on a public waiting list and not due to be examined before xmas I'd say ,

Definitely Break open the bank and offer to pay privately to have both these tests done immediately. Vincent's private do both almost on demand , costs aren't outrageous, especially if you can suffer the endoscopy without sedation ( not easy , takes a lot of psychological will power). From memory you're talking hundreds not thousands € wise.

Good luck and at least you're on the right track seeing the doctor not burying you head in the sand , Doctors can fix an awful lot of things these days , if you give them a chance and are timely, with diagnosis, hence the need to skip queues, rightly or wrongly.

Seeing a specialist would be standard for any procedure, it's to explain the procedure and double check you are a correct candidate for the procedures in question..

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis about 5 months ago - had symptoms for 18+ months at that stage because I hadn’t seen a specialist and had a proper history taken. Endoscopy and colonoscopy were fine initially (as can happen) but had I been able to discuss my symptoms with a doctor, they would have realised that I needed closer monitoring. Eventually sought a second opinion, met with a specialist who actually sat down and spoke to me. He was concerned by my symptoms and repeated every test. Lo and behold, just under a year later, scopes were not fine anymore. Finally got my diagnosis but not after unnecessary delay, anxiety and upset. Sounds like your case is being handled the right way. I also suffered a lot with abdominal pain (and still do from time to time) - it turned out to be a bowel impaction. Best of luck.

I know someone that was quoted €1200 for colonoscopy and endoscopy together under sedation.

    Hi All,
Any chance someone here could recommend a Gastroenterologist Consultant based on their own experience?
I've been diagnosed with UC back in 2000 - last couple of years I've been looked after by one local doctor but he took a different role that doesn't allow for seeing individual patients...
I've had appointments with two different consultants since but I struggle to be listened to or to have any option to ask questions (plus a bit of time from a doctor to answer them). I have a feeling that all they're interested in is to make profit and hopefully maintain, maintain and finally say oops - time to cut or chemo! I've measured the actual time of my last appointment - 7 minutes and 150e. It's like a joke - are you feeling well? any blood? here's your prescription and I'll see you in 6 months... He gave me a prescription for Salofalk and Steroids - take them when you feel you need to take them he said! Mad stuff - I took some steroids in the past and every single time it was strictly controlled by my leading doctor and there was none of this "cowboying".
I'd love to find a doctor that for the money will actually pay some attention to what I say and will try (even a bit only) to get to know me and my case. I don't mind the cost - it's normal that these visits have sense only in private rooms.
I appreciate any feedback and wish you all well!
    Thanks!

Mód note - rightman please stick to one thread as raising many old threads will not gain any further information
