The Sun are saying United offered Sanchez a £25 million signing on fee and £350,000 a week, £60,000 more a week than City were offering to stop him going to City, on top of the £30 million to Arsenal and £5 million to his agent.
If that is what it takes, it is a good deal as his average is close to 1 goal in every 2 games.

Exactly! If the manager wants him well then get him signed up and hand him the #7 shirt !!

Rio on why Sanchez should choose City...
Despite the confidence at Manchester United that the club will win the race to sign Alexis Sanchez, one of their former captains has advised the player to join their rivals, Manchester City. Speaking on BT Sport, Rio Ferdinand said: “I am going to be honest, if he has an option to go from Arsenal to go to Manchester City or Manchester United, as a footballer who wanted to win trophies and would judge myself based on trophies being won, at the moment Man City looks like the place to go for him.

“They are top of the league, they are going to win the league this season, they are in the Champions League, they are looking like they will be in the final for the League Cup, the FA Cup as well potentially. So he has got more opportunities to win trophies there.”

With City indicating that the total cost of signing the Chile international is higher than the Premier League leaders are prepared to pay, United feel they can secure a player capable of addressing two weaknesses in Jose Mourinho’s squad.

United require a striker to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic, whose contract expires in June. Mourinho has also been looking to add a player who can attack at pace from either wing. Sanchez specialises in both roles.

“If on the table [there is] a fantastic opportunity, you fight for that fantastic opportunity,” said Mourinho when asked if he hoped to recruit a player of Sanchez’s ability. “If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t happen it doesn’t happen.” United could also be willing to use the sale of Henrikh Mkhitaryan to part-fund the deal.

At the end of last week, City indicated that they do not want to pay more than £20m as a transfer fee this month, with Arsenal setting an asking price of £35m. They are also understood to have complained about the agent’s fee of “around £5m”.

City still remain in contention with the Gunners for the signing of a former United player, West Brom and Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans, though Arsenal are favourites to land the player.

That's not gonna sit well with some. And Rio calls himself a real ex-Manchester United player??

Well Rio does have a point... But José himself also has a point.

Tough **** on City if they don't want to pony up now and get him when he's literally at the cheapest, you know what I mean before anyone pops up with "oh but they'll get him for nothing in the summer".

TL;DR, Opportunity knocks to sign a fantastic player who's nearing the end of a contract, don't pussyfoot about it.

BUT THAT'S JUST MY 2 CENTS.

    Media love to quote snippets.

    i) the question he was responding to was specifically referring to this season. This transfer window. He said if you are asking about next season it's a very different scenario.

ii) he also said he was going to need tissues to cry during the ad break. ( this was also very likely in relation to his that there was a power shift happening at Manchester. )

Of course Rio has a point, but some people don't want to hear that objectivity. Not that I blame them too much, City's current position is a bit of a bitter pill to swallow.

I get what City might be attempting here - 'Nope, not at that price when we can get him for free in the Summer'. Plus it's not like they need him to secure the title. They arguably already have enough quality in their locker to mount a CL attempt in the latter stages.

However, City have (like us) wasted some stack of millions over the last few years, a lot of those on players unproven in the PL. This Sanchez signing should be a no-brainer for them - PL proven, at his peak, previous good relationship with the current manager. 'Shut up and take our money' should be City's stance for such a player, no matter what his price in 5 months might be.

Them not having this deal done already speaks volumes IMO. I can't imagine that Sanchez feels as great about City now that they have their chance, but are refusing to put up the money. However, that is pure speculation of course.

As for our side of things; Jose speaking so much about it in the Stoke press conference is quite notable IMO. Would Jose put himself out on that very public limb if he thought that there was next to no chance of signing the player? I don't think he would. The Man United official twitter even reprinted his comments. I believe that was all strategic.

Man United are making a very concerted effort to sign Sanchez this window IMO. Whatever is going on in the background with the money men, Jose saying all that he did in public assures me that he wants Sanchez now, and is willing to go out on that limb to show the player how much he wants him at United. Money talks, and no doubt there are vast quantities of it being offered in the background, but some assurances from the manager are just as important.

As a current Arsenal player, Alexis Sanchez isn't to there be reached on the phone by Jose Mourinho. However, there are ways to get messages across directly to the player, and Jose did that quite well in the press conference.

All of that, plus Future Guy showing up, well, it's hard to not to start believing that there's a decent chance this could happen.

City's dilemma with Alexis is his wage demands. He wants more than any other player on the current roster. Yielding to that requirement could unsettle the squad.

I read that somewhere alright, and it is an understandable concern for any club. I used to feel very similarly about United and that we didn't want to break the pay structures and unsettle the rest of the camp.

I lost track and therefore stopped caring somewhere around Rooney's last contract renewal. Pogba has to be on big money, Zlatan too, I really have no idea what United's wage-ceiling for a player is these days.

This mad money is easy for the press to write about. Manchester United generate more visits to their websites than anyone.

Normally, when the time comes that United complete a deal then someone like Ducker will release an approx of the wage way less than the likes if the Sun or the ITK twitter folks.

Whatever deal United do for a player will be done with the finances of it and how it fits in line with the wages offered to others on the wage bill, future offers, all well worked out.

A deal for a player with only 6 months left on his contract is sure to have a big sign on fee included, that may be spread across the contract so it appears to be a much higher 'weekly wage' than it really is.

It would be much easier for a team that is 15 points behind the leaders to justify bringing in a highly paid player than if would be for a team that is romping the league. If City brought him in then every attacking player that has got them into their current position would be calling their agent to get up to parity or close to it and they would be justified doing it. United players wouldn't have that leverage in their position.

Arsenal are apparently nearly done a deal for that Malcom kid too. Important cause our interest seems to have vanished in him, leaving Arsenal he full run at him, and Sanchez won't move till they get the replacement sorted.

    I'm super confident.

Everything points to wanting Sanchez now and Ozil in the summer. Get them, and realistically there's nowhere for Griezmann to fit.
    Lukaku
    Martial - Ozil - Sanchez
    Pogba - Matic

I'd imagine nabbing Sanchez for 30m ish, and Ozil on a free, would mean we could properly focus financially on deepening the midfield and buying some top level wingbacks. This could be some of the best transfer business we've done in years.

(That's also, btw, ignoring the fact it feels like a "Didn't want her anyway" scenario with Griezmann, who looks Barca-bound....)

Its promising looking but until I see him signing a contract i refuse to get in anyway hyped, I've been hurt too many times before.

I'd prefer a more creative type central midfielder over Ozil . I just don't like pogba in a 2 . A player in the mold of modric

Any chance Arsenal would take Mkhitaryan off us if it does happen? Give them an extra £5-10 million for the favour.

Sky sports reporting aswell he's not travelled. Coming from sky sources! I wonder if sky sources are the numerous journos who reported it 45 mins ago

Mkhitaryan and 30 million for him and Ozil seems like a fair deal to me. Both would be eligible for champions league aswell.

Disappointed how things have gone with Mkhitaryan, really thought he'd be a star for us

Getting Sanchez in now as Ibra's replacement would be great!

We could then focus the summer spending on the midfield and replacing Carrick and Fellaini.

So, apparently we couldn't play both Ozil and Sanchez on the CL. I think we can only register one additional player, so we'd have to choose, hence why we seem content to leave Ozil till the summer.

Ah really, that's unfortunate, sure I'll settle for Sanchez on his own then if I have to :)

Would city or arsenal to a lesser extent let this happen though. It would cut the gap to city significantly in terms of first team quality and arsenal fans would have a meltdown if they lost two players to utd even though they would be free agents.

I don't think the restriction is like that. Might be we currently have 24 so could only register one more but we could register ozil in place of one of the currently registered players.

Arsenal don't have a choice in the matter other than sell now, they cannot force them to sign a contract.

With City, they have a team chock full of quality attacking options and it would be hard for Pep to keep them all happy. Plus of Sanchez comes in on parity with the likes of KDB and Aguero it could lead to salary demands from them or other top stars in the team.

Fully expecting City to jump in at the last minute and get Sanchez.

Can’t even get excited if Sanchez is spotted in Manchester as it doesn’t clarify who he will be joining.

Also on Griezmann.... he can go to Barca. I soured on him when he left us high and dry in the Summer.

Fair enough. I thought I read it was one player, but I'm only relaying what I read on Reddit so I'll be happy to be wrong if so :)

I have more respect for griezmann after what he did. At least he showed some loyalty to his own club. Something rare in football these days
