I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow but I thought I'd share my experience from Jan 1982 for the younger members.

It was Jan 1982 I was 15 yrs of age living in blessington due back in school after Christmas in city centre Dublin. My dad opened front door some evening early in January and showed me sheeting rain, no frost it was on my way to bed. Next morning my father called me and showede an imprint of the front door as the smile had drifted about 15ft in front of our house. We were off school for about a week I don't think we've lost out.

Early to mid January 1982 was an event that came out of the blue with two milder interludes either side of it, one of the most memorable cold events you could find in Irish weather history:

I was 9 but I vividly remember jumping into snow drifts up to my neck. I also remember the pain of frostbite in my fingers and learning that putting them straight on a hot radiator was a bad idea!!

    Magic days.

According to Mt's last update, anything below 150m ASL in Dublin won't see a whole lot bar rain.

Mate of mine is a mountain rescue, he says the amount of people heading up in snow ill equipped is insane, stay safe, and don't take risks.

Not aimed at you cameramonkey, just a general. ;)

Ticknock and the 3 rock are an easy walk from car or bus if the snow starts at 150 meters. In fact they are pretty perfect locations.

Kippure is a different story. would not attempt the drive over the next few days.

I’m expecting Rain arriving later on overnight turning to sleet then and then a decent chance of snow through tomorrow.
In regards to accumulations I’d say a decent covering at best.

Park in Marlay and walk up to Killmashogue, but I'd say you'll get very wet before you'll see snow unfortunately.

    Aye I remember ‘82 well
Started on a Thursday night here stopped Saturday lunchtime at which point the ditches had disappeared under the drifts
A continuous actual blizzard with thunder snow
The weight of the snow brought down main lines cutting power to Arklow Gorey and Enniscorthy
The sub station in Arklow was rationing power between the rural and urban lines
We had power for 2 hours a day

I've read that sentence over and over and I have no idea what it means

Should we be putting the BBQs away in Waterford tomorrow night so?
If this cold really moves South East we'll have to start wearing long pants here. :D

The last snow map (accurately illustrated by my good self) shows -20 everywhere except in Waterford where we were frying eggs on our car bonnets and wearing flipflops in +20 and blue skies.

Whatever we get in the next 24hrs (I've written us off here in Dublin for tonight and early tomorrow at least) - don't forget met.ie and generally the forecast for for very cold with wintry precip out to the end of next week.

We'll all get something - and if we don't, it's only 9 days into a 120 day winter. Plenty of time.

TAFs as of 5pm, anything snowy in bold. Note heavy rain for Cork and Shannon:

I've read that sentence over and over and I have no idea what it means

I think it means when he opened the front door, he saw an imprint of the front door in it's place - an imprint made of beautiful snow.

Google "snow front door imprint" and click images.

You have it in one. Temperatures in Offaly tomorrow will be in the 16-18C range as the county enjoys an Indian Summer. Once you cross the borders temperatures will be around 0-2C.

    What time is kickoff?

    Kick off where?
First reports of sleety snow should be coming in after midnight somewhere at the northern edge of the front
Fronts advancing into cold air like this do so slowly

Excellent. I might take the jet ski out for a spin and a bit of a picnic afterwards. Thanks for the heads up.

    You might aswell:D

No the onset of the warm front brings a rise in temperatures. But as the front slowly moves in it should be a case of sleet to snow in Offaly.
