Imagine the marketing dept for the UFC if he's stripped, and his next fight in the UFC.
It will be a field day for them, the amount of promo they could do would be unreal for the UFC.
Wouldn't surprise me if this is all a calculated move from everyone involved...apart from the other fighters on the roster.

This! This really wouldn't surprise me at all.

Tony v Khabib confirmed for April.
If Tony wins, this plays out perfectly.

Tony v Conor on the big July card.
Winner vrs Khabib in Russia in September (or Nov in MSG)

Timing works perfectly around Ramadan. I'd say Tony winning is their preferred outcome if they go that route.

The reason this is happening is Conor told the he doesn't want to fight until September at the earliest.
Khabib will smash Tony, Conor will stay in the wind and then Khabib will smash someone else in September in Russia.

Conor will eventually return for a crack at 170 or for the trilogy with Diaz. He has no desire to be murdered by Khabib.

I think Khabib wrecks Tony and Conor fights him in Russia in September.

He has no desire to be murdered by Khabib.

It's doubtful he fears Khabib. He'll have a game plan and he'll think it will work, even if it doesn't. Same as his last four fights.

Matt serra was saying on the ufc unfiltered podcast that its very bad for the mcgregor brand if he was to get mauled by khabib. I totally agree.

Reckon he fights diaz now that he does not have to defend his belt.

2 belts, 0 defenses, stripped twice....says it all really

Whelp...... looks like Conor will be stripped. But I am sure Dana and him have made some sort of arrangement. I wonder how all his endorsements will go once he is stripped. I'm sure he doesn't want to lose them as they are a steady income.

I'm cool with Conor coming back to fight in September when he will be ready. I'm excited for a Khabib vs T-Feurg fight. Even if Alvarez is thrown into that mix, it would be cool too. Although, for me, the three top LW contenders are Conor, Khabib, and Tony.

I'm excited to see the fights shaping out so far in 2018. Although, with the new Reebok payment system coming out, I can't help but feel that the fighters are getting gipped even further. And with Dana's comments of wanting to see more "stars" in the UFC. All these fighters on the roster are starting to become a bit dodgy. UFC is needing to fulfill their end of the buy-out. They are pocketing money left and right off the backs of fighters.

It will be interesting to see how the Conor saga carries on. I would love to see him fight again, but it is delusional to demand something out of someone as a fan. It is his life after all....... I wish him all the best.

Where's all this September talk coming from all of a sudden? I thought it was August? FFS, an extra month of waiting is NOT cool  :D

I wonder if they were saying the same thing when he was going to fight GSP. No one wants to see a rubber match between Diaz and McGregor. After all this fiasco about legitimizing the division and allegedly stripping McGregor, all for a trilogy makes no sense. It doesn’t have the same sentiment now, with everything that has occurred.

Either McGregor returns before September to defend or get title shot, or he vacates the entire LW division. If he doesn’t want to fight in LW, and wants to take money fights, then Nate Diaz is on the bottom of that list.

    What does it say, exactly?

The reason this is happening is Conor told the he doesn't want to fight until September at the earliest.
Khabib will smash Tony, Conor will stay in the wind and then Khabib will smash someone else in September in Russia.

Conor will eventually return for a crack at 170 or for the trilogy with Diaz. He has no desire to be murdered by Khabib.

This scenario doesn’t make sense. Why would he go up to 170 or for the rubber match, when he can come back to LW and have another crack at a title shot? Say, he gets stripped, Khabib and Tony fight in April, then both get a decent break until September, and Conor is ready to come back. Whether in Russia, or Croker, or whatever they have planned.

Conor has business to complete in the LW division, and he’s playing it smart. I don’t think he cares being stripped, if it gives him the advantage of time to train until September, and waiting out to see the outcome of Khabib versus Tony.

My question is this..... why would Tony be willing to fight Khabib again after 3 failed attempts, and the risk of losing a title. He would be paid more money fighting against Conor. And if he lost against Conor, he would still be #2 with another chance for a rematch. Here, he risks losing his place at the title, and risks losing a rematch against Khabib, especially if Conor will get first title shot when he comes back.

All of this works in Conor’s favor. Most works in Khabib ‘s favor. It really doesn’t work in Tony’s favor, unless he wins, wins, wins.

I feel for Tony...... he deserves his success and deserves to fight against Conor. All of this, I feel, is the UFC setting up for a money fight between Khabib and Conor.

I have **** all interest in seeing Conor in a cage with Diaz again.

Khabib or Tony, if he goes after anyone else he is not doing himself and favours.

McGregor promotions present Paddy Hollihan in International waters in a no commission fight.

  • Registered Users Posts: 104 ✭✭EoineyM

I'd say the UFC would love to get a Rocky IV style showdown between McGregor and Khabib in Russia. It would be huge. There is the political dimension also. You can imagine the promos "a fight than transcends the sport....." Obviously McGregor not American but they have adopted him as one of their own. Roles would be reversed in the training also with Khabib wrestling bears and doing situps in the snow while McGregor gets wired up to all kinds of machines in the UFC PI.

Prior to UFC196. Nate Diaz was a favourite of long-standing fans. But he wasn't exactly a PPV star. Beating McGregor projected him into the casualstream, made him a draw. Which was utilised at 202.
When Conor took the belt, the 155 division in disarray. Tony v Khabib fell through 3 times, Lee waffled into the top 5. Diaz, despite having 1 win at LW in 4 years, was ranked in the top spots. The mess of 155 meant the rubber match was somehow relevant. When we're talkinging about McGregor, Diaz's name was thrown about. That's gone now.
The LW division is in a neat little row, Tony's the interim, Khabib is the contender. Due to McGregor factor, all eyes are on those two now. Every post, every picture, every movement. The MMA world is watching, and waiting for anything to happen. McGregor's inactivity has only caused their stock to rise imo.
Maybe I'm projecting my own hopes for the division. But the Nate Diaz rubber match isn't nearly as relevant at it was a year ago.

Is this first time we had situation like this? Title holder is stripped because of him not wanting to defend it? How does this work now? If Conor is stripped is Tony striped too of his interm title also and Tony Kabhib fight for LW belt?

When has Conor ever given any indication that he makes his fight decisions based on how he would look if he lost a fight? Everything he's done recently has been motivated by what is the biggest fight, and Khabib in Russia to regain/defend his title is top of the list right now. If he beats Khabib he is the solidified best LW in the world. It's ridiculous all these mind-readers "he has no interest in fighting Khabib."...how could anyone know that?

Every indication he's given shows he thinks he can beat Khabib. He thinks he can beat Lawler, Woodley, GSP etc. Just because in your own view he should fear fighting someone doesn't at all mean that he does. That might look like delusion to some who put themselves in his shoes but not to him, we all know this.

His brand is pretty bulletproof as well at this stage.

As far as Conor always wanting the biggest fight, I think right now, that's Khabib in Russia. That's way bigger than gsp, Floyd 2, Paulie dickhead, etc. Whatever he thinks about the outcome, I'd say the biggest fight is all he thinks about. He'll need some security escort out of there though when he sleeps Khabib in the first 2 minutes.

If Conor is stripped, Tony is the undisputed LW champion. Why would Tony be stripped.

Has he been stripped of the belt? They have not said if the Tony v Khabib fight is for interim or full LW title, have they?

They haven't said either way. Tony v Khabib was essentially confirmed, but it hasn't been announced "officially".
Expecting that to happen this weekend

It happens all the time. But, he is wanting to defend, just not in the time line the UFC wants. Stripping him is the right thing, but if it was due to refusing to defend, believe me, Dana would make that noted and that would be the sentiment entirely. It’s simply not the case.....

So the interm belt turns into the undisputed belt meaning he is defending the lw belt in april? I assaumed tonys belt would be gone to cause there is no need for a interm belt cause conor wont defend the belt making conors belt useless

They should make new belt kabhib and tony fight for it in April.

I heard that the fight between tony and khabib will be for undisputed. I haven’t seen reports that Tony will be promoted to champ. That’s what I fear will be the messed up thing for T-Feurg. He has earned the title shot against McGregor, and realistically he should be promoted to undisputed champ. I think if that was the case, Tony wouldn’t want to fight Khabib. Not because he’s scared, but because he would want to build his own brand as champ. Khabib has gotten the McGregor pathway of fighting, and that’s why this whole thing stinks of a setup for a Khabib versus Conor.
