Looking for advice, I currently have a second hand Trek 7.3 hybrid, not in bad nick (€250, I think it's 7 years old) as I only got into cycling end of the summer to see if I would like it and keep it up. Well, I do, and I will, and I want to cycle farther now, and the Hybrid isn't cutting it, so was looking at Focus Cayo al 105 https://www.dbcycles.ie/products/focus-cayo-al-105 and a Giant contend sl1 https://www.dbcycles.ie/products/giant-contend-sl-1 thought on both of these? I'm not looking to go 1000's of km every week, just maybe 100/200. Please don't say a dearer bike, this is the very top end of my budget....THANKS:)

I have an alu defy disc 2016, which I think the contend replaced. Nothing wrong with the bike, very comfortable on up to 200km spins, but I have found it a bit limited/ not as versatile as I would've subsquently wanted. No rack mounts, custom only mudguards (unless going clip ons), no clearance for wider tyres if you want to do light off road/ gravel (I've fitted 32mm cross tyres, but only just and then with zero clearance for mud).

They weren't as popular then as now, but if I was able to go back I think I would be considering cross/ gravel bikes as well as "endurance" models. More upright position (not sure on the direct comparison to an endurance geometry), can be got with rack and mudguard mounts for winter/ commute options, wider tyres for gravel/ tow paths/ fire roads etc. But maybe none of that matters to you, so could be moot!

I'm guessing you're looking at buying local. If so, this is the same price and is better specced over all from somewhere else in Athlone.

I hired one in Portugal this year and it was great. Full 105 groupset and Aksium wheels are better than a lot you'd get on bikes

Just noticed it might only be in 53. Planet X have some similarly priced bikes too.
