Banking style teaching is "the talking teacher and listening student". Its basically the idea that the teacher fills the students with knowledge (from a book) and discourages active participation from students within a class.

Are you just trying to rise people with this?? People doing the PME are bate out trying to get the students do 80% of the talking as the supervisors want active methodologies in every class. Maybe the reason you're so against the PME is because you've been given incorrect information.

The OP doesn't have the money for it and so has decided it is ineffective.

There is no alternative route into teaching OP unless you go abroad and qualify.

A teacher who doesn't command respect will be eaten alive in certain classes.

What I've been trying to say all day :)

I was thinking about this thread and realise how ironical it is that the OP is looking for shortcuts into teaching but says that students aren't treated fairly and with respect when in fact the most a student deserves is to have a 100% qualified teacher who made the right choices and followed through on them.

Because Youthreach is generally for Travellers where they all come from the same backgrounds etc. Teaching in a secondary school, you deal with all kinds of student and how to deal with this. You have to be able to deal with high achieving kids to kids that will be lucky to get a pass. Teaching in Youthreach will mostly be LCA and Junior Cycle.

bit of a generalization ? Travelers are over represented in youthreach as are kids from poor neighbourhoods but the intake is broad. Ive worked in both. Generally to be effective in youthreach you have to be a very good teacher.

The OP was asking why he/she could teach in Youthreach and not a secondary school and in the majority of cases, students would not sit the traditional leaving cert - correct me if I'm wrong. And 'generally' to be effective in any educational setting - you have to be a good teacher.
