There are some great facebook pages for Irish people, "dublin vegans" https://www.facebook.com/groups/DublinVegans/?ref=br_rs etc where you can ask about things local to you. As for books/vids there are a ton! And recipe pages. Happy Pear lads do a series of 5 minute dinner videos on youtube which are great https://www.youtube.com/user/happypeargreystones

This book is supposed to be good https://www.thugkitchen.com/cookbooks
http://ohsheglows.com/ and vegan stoner are handy sites for recipes too. I love this:

Veganuary is great and about to start, it's for people new to veganism and those trying it out for January. They have recipes and newsletters for all of January if you sign up. https://veganuary.com/

They also have a book that is being released just after christmas called How To Go Vegan: The why, the how, and everything you need to make going vegan easy:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/How-Go-Vegan-everything-going/dp/1473680964/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1513635010&sr=8-1&keywords=how+to+go+vegan
I recommend signing up to the campaign, think they do starter kits too.

Here is a great resource of where to eat out over all of Ireland http://irishvegan.ie/?page_id=4

This is a great place for info too: https://www.reddit.com/r/vegan/

Any other questions let me know!

First off, congrats on a great decision. Don't forget to sign up for your official Vegan ID badge (thats how we all know each other) and your glass of lemonade will be delivered. Ah no, I jest. No club, badge, secret handshake etc. Although a secret handshake would be great!!:pac::pac:

As Tar says there are a good few FB pages for people around the country, where are you located? There is a fairly active group in Cork. I'm not to sure about Galway.

Is there anything in particular you want or need info on?

Watch out for the bizarre hostility you will now encounter, regardless of how low a profile you keep your veganism. Guessing it already manifested on this thread actually.

    Hi thelad84.

Kudos on a great life decision. One thing you should definitely do is get a B12 supplement.

I am wondering about peoples experience the first time they went vegan is there anything they would do different, are there particular foods i should be eating a lot of? I always hear you need meat for protein and diary for calcium.
What about supplements as another poster said i'll need B12 is there anything i need to be supplementing?

Seitan has more protein than meat. Tempeh and tofu about the same. Quorn has plenty too. You don't need meat for protein, but you do need to make sure you eat enough. As far asi remember .8g per kg body weight is the minimal requirement (or your recommended bw if you are fat).

Green veg are high in calcium.

vitamin d and Dha supplementation is probably a good idea. Algae oil is a proper veg source for the latter.

I'm primarily a meat eater, and thus get a blood check every so often, as I'm aware I'm missing out on some vitamins a more mixed (read; lots more veggies) would give me. Going vegan, you obviously don't have the option to toss back a steak to balance out what you may be missing, so check with your doc what vitamins you should increase. Perhaps take a diary of what you're eating for a week before going to said doc, so they can see what area you may be lacking when the results come back.

Getting blood works done with your doctor, and letting them know that you've gone vegan, and also listening to their advice regarding additional vitamins that you'll need starting off. Having the blood works done now will allow the doc see how you are now, so should any vitamin deficiencies come to light now, you may have a better chance of correcting it now, as opposed to 6 months down the line, and wondering if your change to a vegan lifestyle has caused it.

As well as following various Facebook pages, search for vegan cooks on youtube, who'll go through how to produce tasty snacks.
