    Hi all

Flying into Perth in January and will be there for 3 weeks. Our plan is to live/work in Melbourne for at least 6 months and to travel there by car from Perth.

So we'll be buying a WA car and will need to register it in our name while there. Our Air BnB host has agreed to let us use their address to register the car.

We'll only be in Perth for 3 weeks before we head for Melbourne. Is there a way to register the car in person at a vehicle license centre? Or can it only be done via Post?

    Thanks

You do know it's a long way!

Many of the post offices do vehicle registration. I know for sure joondalup do it

Yep I'm well aware, about 3,500 - 4,000km to be exact. I have the whole thing mapped out already.

Yeah I've read that you can go to a Motor Licensing department location and do it but just wanted to confirm

If you want to let me know what part of Perth you'll be in. My uncle works in Police Traffic Corps so can ask him.

It's a long long drive. I went from Perth to Alice Springs and it took days. Mind you Melbourne is lovely. One tip I would give you is to pop into the Crown Casino in Perth as they will give you free loyalty points for the Crown in Melbourne for food and accommodation ( you can also use them in Perth but you can get four times the value in another Crown)

We'll be in Victoria Park, not far from CBD. Thanks

Have you done a driving holiday before? They can seem like a fun idea but they can also be a complete drag. Driving for hooooooooours gets boring quickly.

Ok you should be able to pop into the GPO and do it. Murray St.

Nice area. Burswood near as well.

Take the scenic route and travel via the eyre peninsula stay in port Lincoln great fishing/parks/shark cage diving etc... from there you are 7hrs drive from Adelaide and the another 9 or so to Melbourne.

Other option is to head the great ocean road route to Melbourne from Adelaide by heading towards mt.gambier and checking out the blue lake, what’s another 1000 or so km at that stage if traveling from WA!

Once you buy a car the person selling it has to send of a transfer of ownership form..he fills in his details I think and you fill in yours and they send it of in the post.

Then a week of so later you’ll get a letter saying that you bought such and such car for let’s say $3000 and you’ve then to pay a % of the cost of the car to transfer the licence/ownership.

Then depending how long of a rego is left on the car, the next letter will be to say rego is due by...16 June etc..

So just keep in mind when when you buy the car when the rego expires (u can check online anyway) and keep in contact with your air bnb host just to check if any mail like speeding fines you could of got came in the post or rego notices.

When you make the move to Victoria you will have to register the car there. It will mean new number plates and fees to change it over.
