For track 6 on no grave but the sea alone, it gets my vote.
Anything that can make "I'm a little Teapot" sound that awesome deserves every accolade going.

I defy anyone to not sing along...

That's song of the year for me. It's... a masterpiece :pac:

I voted for ItPLoD. It was the first album I listened to this year. Stayed top of my playlist since.

Voted for Sons of Apollo. Hopefully get to see them in 2018.

Voted Steven Wilson. No matter what he puts his hand to, it's great. Sure he's already won 2018 gig of the year too :pac:

Are a few there I must check out though, particularly Sons of Apollo

Would love to see SoA do a gig over here.

I went with Steven as well. Blackfield V was also an outstanding album this year too. Very similar to his solo album imo.

I voted for Steven Wilson's "To The Bone". As per usual fantastic listen from one of the most consistently brilliant artists of the last 20 or so years. Changes sound quite a bit compared to what people were expecting (to some negative reactions) but that's what SW does. He never sits on the same sound and that can be challenging, but being challenge musically isn't a bad thing. I would rate "To The Bone" behind his last 2 releases, but they were of such high quality that's not much of a negative comment.

Pain of Salvations "In The Passing Light of Day" was a close second. A real return to form as far as I'm concerned, getting kacj to their prog-metal roots.

Ayreon's "The Source" was a great album if you like his other stuff. I had the bonus of getting to see a few of the songs live in Tilburg in September in what was a very special gig.

Thought Mastodon's "Emperor of Sand" was fairly disappointing. Very run of the mill stuff.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I notice Code Orange high on those lists, must be missing something I'll be honest not heard it but saw them live when they were Code Orange Kids, things must have changed drastically coz they were bollocks.

See, they're not even cool enough for choosing just one best album for both Rock and Metal (and for hundreds of sub genres between them)!

Seriously, I live in this forum since 2009 and never voted I simply think it is impossible and unfair (and not necessary) to choose just one winner every year. As I said, there are too many genres within Rock and Metal and you can't really compare symphonic, trash, sludge and speed!

I have absolutely nothing against the idea of making lists and sharing thoughts about best releases but honestly this voting is just wrong. If it was "Best 50 Albums in Rock and Metal in 2017", or best 50 for Rock and best 50 for Metal, or something like that, I would be with you, but this "Just One Album of the Year 2017 in Rock and Metal" makes me a bit nervous!

My apologies for ruining your party!
By the way, I don't even see who voted on it so I don't even know those 20 people who make that historical decision - this is quite unfair too.

Well thanks for putting a turd in the proverbial punchbowl.

Relax, it's only a bit of lighthearted fun ffs. The international Rock & Metal community won't be on tenderhooks to see what albums Boards users vote for.

No it is not. I love music and you hurt my feelings!

Well I personally think that R/M is quite nice and important forum on boards and internationally I feel like a part of it and I want to be proud of it and I feel responsible for not letting you know what I think about this voting.

And thanks I feel much more relaxed now please continue your hard work - best of luck with it!

Just listened to the Steven Wilson album as its leading and just like most of his other work, I dont get the hype? Am I missing something?
It just comes across as self-indulgent art drivel to me. Is it the demographic of the forum or what as I just cant relate or even buy into Stevens songs? Obviously he's a talented musician but the pedestal he gets put on for every release is bizarre to me. I wish I could "get" him.

Conversely, I also listened to the Trivium album through again and while not my favourite album of theirs, I can hear what they are trying to do and appreciate the musicianship.

If anything, Steven Wilson doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Who rates him apart from a handful of Boards users? The press overlook him and the mainstream most certainly ignore him. He gets moderate reviews from critics so it's good to see a talent get some attention, even if it is just on here. ;)

You could probably count me in the "don't get it" camp when it comes to Steven Wilson. Though I will say To the Bone is an album that's growing on me. It's one of those that seems to need repeated listens to appreciate its worth.

On the lists thing... I generally just use them as a way of discovering new music that I might otherwise have missed. One example I can think of is Avenged Sevenfolds' The Stage from last year. It was well into 2017 before I got to hear it & wouldn't have found it if not for this place.

If I notice an album or band getting mentions in several different end-of-year lists I'll give it a spin and see for myself what the hype is about. Sometimes it's not my cup of tea; other times it can be a real gem.
