Cheers for that link I got this:

Status: Detection Error: This system may be vulnerable, either the Intel(R) MEI/TXEI driver is not installed (available from your system manufacturer) or the system manufacturer does not permit access to the ME/TXE from the host driver.
    Tool Stopped

Edit: Post I was referring to vanished. Ninja delete.

oops... I was editing it, guess I hit wrong button.

    My post:
I just ran the Intel Detection Tool: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us.../software.html

    I got this back:

    Processor Name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz
Status: This system is not vulnerable.

Apparently that's an older version of the checker and nothing to do with Spectre, Meltdown and ETC, that's what I've been told.

    I just received the following response from Intel;
"The tool you used is for another kind of vulnerability (Intel-SA-00086) which was mitigated some time ago".

    That clears that up then.

    Run Powershell as administrator:

    Install-Module SpeculationControl
    then
    Get-SpeculationControlSettings

    Ran that and got

PowerShellGet requires NuGet provider version '2.8.5.201'

    and then

    Untrusted repository
You are installing the modules from an untrusted repository.

    Canceled out then.

Handy new tool from Steve Gibson to test your vulnerability.

    https://www.grc.com/inspectre.htm

Apparently Haswell on can avoid some of the perf hits.

That site is coming up as unsafe?

That means you're using Windows Defender “SmartScreen” - a pile of garbage.

Dont take advice from strangers on the internet but this is from a guy who's been talking cryptography for more than 11yrs straight. You can safely ignore the warning. If you put "Inspectre" into google youll see reputable sources recommending it.

I predict that money has gone to my bank account.
/me checks account, it's not there.
    Am I an Intel CPU?

If I have no money in my bank account can I just not bother updating?

ASUS has begun releasing the updated UEFI BIOS images for the x299 boards at least.

That's only a security deposit, you'll get it back don't worry. Somewhere, there's a very happy Nigerian Prince who'll finally be able to bequeath the contents of a will to you.

No, that's a known issue. You need the newer version of it:

    https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?99119-AI-Suite-3-00-13-available

Though others report a Win10 update also fixes the older versions compatability.

Hmmm, I was on the mobo support page and the latest version there listed is the one I have. The link suggests the new one fixes an issue with the windows 10 update but I didn't have any problems with that, only the bios update messed things up. I'll give it a bash anyway.

Meltdown affected Intel chips and one Arm processor. Spectre is present in chips made by Intel, Arm and AMD.

I see Intel's message has gotten out there, that everybody is affected equally. Which is completely untrue.

How long until they market it as a "feature"?

Dell is advising that all customers should not deploy the BIOS update for the Spectre (Variant 2) vulnerability at this time. We have removed the impacted BIOS updates from our support pages and are working with Intel on a new BIOS update that will include new microcode from Intel.
Acer do not recommend updating your BIOS if your system has a Core i CPU from the 4th (Haswell) or 5th (Broadwell) generation, as it may cause system instability.
