6 nights Vegas or 3 San Fran 3 Vegas

Booking a trip to Vegas next week for June bank holiday weekend. Leaving Wednesday before and returning Tuesday after. 6 nights in total.

Return flights with layover in Boston costing 450 with AerLingus.

However one or two have said to me that 6 nights is too long for Vegas, so I could do a multitrip flight option and fly into SFO direct, then home from Vegas with the Boston layover. This costs 521. Internal flight SFO - LV probably cost around 80.

Would it be worth it to split it into 3 nights in each or is there enough to do in Vegas to get you through 6 nights?

Would love to hear any responses with people who did similar, or even anyone who has holidayed in San Francisco or Vegas in general, thanks.

I've done Vagas a few times and if you stay in the city 2 days is enough. If you do day trips out it may be better, but then you have the expense of the day trip. Last time I was there I took a helicopter to the Grand Canyon, it was expensive and only a few hours but great to do.

I'd definitely do a split trip if flying over from Ireland.

Split the trip. 3 nights in Vegas is more than enough.

Split the trip, you'll have seen all Vegas in 24hrs and it will be rince repeat.

I done 5 nights before and way too much.

Good stuff to do and see in San Fran

San Fran is super, definitely recommend it. Brilliant for shopping too, better than LA or NY imho.

If your going to stay in Vegas make plans to do something, hoover dam, red rock canyon, grand canyon, or a few shows. The novelty will wear off after 48hrs and all that will be left to do is drink an gamble.

Thanks for all the responses so far. Definitely have me leaning toward splitting it now.

Is SFO far better than LA if I were to split it? (Which I probably will now)

Reason its only a 6 night holiday is that I am going to East Coast in December too.

LOL, my wife and I are obviously have VERY different tastes to many here! I go to Vegas every year or so and won't do less than 5 days/nights as that's nowhere near enough to enjoy it all and settle into a good daily routine. Last year we went to the States for 13 days, spent the first 4 nights in the Golden Nuggest (downtown Las Vegas, very nice spot for a change from the Strip), went to Tahoe for 4 more nights to snowboard and then back to Vegas for 5 final nights at the Wynn. Great Michelin-quality restaurants everywhere, awesome shows and bands, shopping, sights, loads of day trips an easy drive away, skiing nearby or a 4 hour drive to amazing resorts in Utah, the freedom to start knocking back cocktails from breakfast time onwards, it's an adult's playground for sure :)

As you might spot from my signature, I do work in the poker industry and have always loved the gaming side of things in Vegas, although I'd probably only play two or three sessions total while there, and in the past ten years I've been there most years for at least 5 nights each time, with an aim of 10 nights if we can. I always assume that people saying 'you only need one night there' might be missing out on some aspects of what makes Vegas great?

It has gotten very expensive though, which is a pain, and to enjoy the fine dining, shows you will need to spend a fair amount.

Worth adding that San Francisco is obviously really cool too, lived there for a few years in the early '00s, I just think if you are only going for 6 nights you should stick to one or the other and being very familiar with the two I'd go with Vegas unless you've never been to SF :D

Depends what your after, but for me SF over LA. LA is great out on the beach, Venice, Redondo, Santa Monica......Id happily move here. Downtown is a bit of a ****hole tbh, good clubs if you know people, great restaurants, shopping if you've the cash, can do the usual tourist things, good if you're into Hollywood/american dream/celeb stuff/fake everything.

SF is very chilled, Alcatraz, cycle over the Golden Gate Bridge/Park, shopping as mentioned is superb, food and culture is top notch, jazz breakfast on a Sunday is recommended, trams, union square. For me has more substance and character.

6 nights in Vegas is way too much. You could even argue 3 nights is too much too. You could take a day at the Grand Canyon in between.

Thread moved to where it would be better suited.

Going next week for 7 nights. Already have a plan of what to do each day and it's not enough to fit what we want. Definitely do the 6 nights in Vegas. We don't gamble BTW so there's loads to do without it.

It's a 9 - 11 hour flight to Vegas or SF so you will need a half day or more to catch up with a nap or long sleep so that cuts in to your time if you split 3 / 3 days.

I'd hate having to repack after basically 2.5 days.

Do 6 nights in one or the other and use that time to explore outwards in a rental car or day trips.

We got a convertible mustang and drove the deserts, mohave and death valley.

Decided if you want party / pool / club vibes or if you want culture and touristy stuff and that will tell you which to choose.

I started and ended a two week holiday in Las Vegas last August. Flew into Las Vegas in the afternoon, just rested up really that day, the following day took a day trip to Death Valley, loved it, the next day I flew to Salt Lake city, fast forward 8 days and I returned to Vegas, the following day I went on a camping trip from Vegas, first day went to Zion NP and we camped at Bryce Canyon NP, the next day we went to Antelope Canyon and we went and camped in Monument Valley, following day we went to the Grand Canyon and was back to Vegas that evening.
I think Vegas is a great location for tours. I didn't gamble.

Vegas for 6 nights gets my vote
A nice chill out day bang in the middle

    Have been 4 times, 7, 6, 6, and then lastly 3 nights

The last trip of 3 nights was just a big tease, and that was sleeping probably just 2 hours a night.
There is simply too much fun to be had for 3 nights

Even during my longer stays I would have liked to have stayed on longer

A guy in work went cos he heard me say nothing but good things about it.
He booked 7 nights, I was worried he’d come back and kill me, but he loved it so much he went back for another 7 nights

OP here. Thanks for advice so far.

Having discussed it and taken on board some more advice, we are going to do the 6 nights in Vegas.

There is an interest in partying but also in things like Grand Canyon helicopter tours, Shooting range, etc.

The death valley thing looks interesting, might have to look into that.

All of us gamble a little but to be honest that is bottom of my priority list, if I didn't have one bet over there it wouldn't bother me.

Booking flights this Friday, the first day will probably be a write off anyway - Dublin to Boston, 3 hour layover then Boston to Vegas is an intense day of travel. I wish I could do it through London but the prices don't make it worth it in my view.

Any recommendations on shows? We plan to book one beforehand and if we enjoy it we might get tickets to another over there.

I wouldnt book any tickets till you get there. You can get special deals at the ticket kiosk on the street, or you may not know how your days will pan out until you get there

I guarantee you your first day will not be a write off. The taxi from the airport to hotel will see to that. The place is just buzzing. You will have a plan to go to bed when you get there, but I guarantee you won’t :-)

I only ever gamble in Vegas. That way it remains fun for me
My one piece of advice is to please try playing crapps (dice game at the big long table) early in the day the minimum bets are normally low, even at the nice casinos. If not, the casinos on Fremont are cheaper. This is the most fun game in the casino and makes your money go a very long way. It looks complicated but it is so simple and you can just place the same bet over and over

Normally the whole table of strangers win together at the same time. Great atmosphere and free beers :-)

    Have a great trip

+1 on waiting until you land to book shows. I recommend the Blue Man group. Excellent mind blowing show and not that pricey at all.

Please Please get a limo from the airport. It's like $80, just split the fare among your mates. The limo driver stopped at a liquor store and drove us up and down the strip while we where boozing in the back with music blaring. He will drive you anywhere you want to go for up to an hour so it's too good to pass up for an experience by itself. He brought us to the Welcome to Las Vegas sign and just skipped the queue for us (it's a scam, no need to queue to take photo's).
