Slight tangent, but I still find it weird that the League lies so far behind the Championship in terms of preference and priority. I know we've won it a few times in recent years, but still.

Maybe I've just been conditioned by the soccer where the Premier League always comes first.

league was only brought in the 70 s. The gaa is a amateur organization where a knock out competition was the base. Thats what makes an all ireland. Nobody wants a 10 team league with a team winning a all ireland with 2 games to go. How sh8te would that be.

Also in regards to soccer I would say a champs league is on par with a domestic league medal to players and a world cup medal for their country is better than any league medal.

in england they have nothing , they would kill to have what we have , the set up of the all ireland series and munster championship , they would prefer to have a 38 week season where the same teams win all the time and the lesser teams forge a rivalry that no one cares about outside that town or city

when clare play limerick the whole country stops here in ireland , that dont happen for any darby in england

Woeful. But so bad that it's obvious not where we are.

    4 weeks and we'll know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 465 ✭✭letsseehere14

Ahhhh they've been playing the league since the 1920s.

We won 5 in a row in the 30s!

This theory makes no sense from an S&C perspective so I wouldn't pay any attention to it. You do not put high level athletes into a situation where they are going to stress their bodies in a game if their bodies are already fatigued and under stress from training - that's a recipe for breaking down, aka getting injured. It sounded woeful on the radio and JK looked both dejected and even a bit angry in the post match interview I saw. James Ryan made a lot of good points on the radio also after the game - basically this group have standards that they set among themselves and the culture within the group is to drive that standard on - they never go out with the 'it's only the league' attitude so the league performances have to be a concern. That's not to say they still cannot win an AI this year and I wouldn't bet against them but a lot of these lads while still relatively young have a lot of miles on the clock so the writing could be on the wall and we're just choosing to ignore it.

I've a great plan for a revamped hurling season/championship - how do I get it adopted by the powers that be??? 😀 The league is really a terrible competition played in mostly terrible conditions not suited to hurling, the championship is over before you know it and last year had we made it to the AI final our championship would have consisted of playing Clare 3 times, Cork twice and Tipp & Waterford once. A bit of a joke for an All Ireland competition.

simple way I would do is the league 1a finalists replace the two mcdonagh teams in the qf premlinary and if they have already qualified then the 4 th team in munster/leinster goes through.

Guaranteed ai advancement for league finalists. Then i bet kiely would have sent a different team out last 2 weeks

think your right. Its only the league etc while results may not go your way its the performances u want and who is putting the hand up. Last night was worse than any performance in 2009 to 2012 era. They simply couldn’t do the basics right at home against a relegated team with nothing to play for.

I saw kielys interview and he is definitely massively concerned. His main concern is getting the frontliners on the field april 20 because he cant rely on the new breed.

O brien and English come in for reidy and Flanagan. Wod in for hannon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 465 ✭✭letsseehere14

Exactly. That approach will end up with you having a ward full of injured players. But it's an excuse used by fans of every county after they lose a league game. The heavy block, training Friday excuse.

Losses like this are down to mental approach and tactical preparation. When you've the likes of Coughlan, O'Connor, O'Brien, English, O'Dalaigh trying to break into the 15, and Flanagan trying to reclaim his spot, performances like this are terminal for them and definitely not what they're planning for themselves.

Why is O'Brien being seen as "nailed on" especially over Reidy who never has a bad game.

O'Brien was a huge part of the problem in every game we lost this league. Even his goal last night was a crap shot that luckily came back to him and he done little to create the move.

He has been just as hit and miss ass most of the team.

Darragh O’Donovan made Shane O’Brien a name within GAA circles. From what I have seen of him, he’s a decent hurling but thats about it.

He doesnt yet have the hands to play Inter County at highest levels. His opportunity is that Seamus has been so poor for a while now (including much of last year).

For a ball to stick on inside line and act as a foil for Gillane, then look at English or Hegarty. Both are actually able to catch hold of a ball and turn a man.

Limerick were 1/12 to win last night. I havent seen any of the game but would i worry if i was from Limerick not one little bit. Arent Limerick off on a holiday traning camp very soon? Last night means nothing in the greater scheme of things. Gettingbout of Munster is all that matters. Once that happens Limerick love Croke Park and will be very hard to stop. Nobody will remember what happened in the league id say the players have already forgotton about last night.

Did our county teams swap places this weekend for a bet ?

Footballers put 4-24 past Waterford to secure promotion. Annoyingly nobody in GAA or the media has taken to using a 0-0-0 scoring format so hard to know if that's down to loads of 2 pointers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭biglad40isback

i dunno. He has already got a cult following from the 4 games i ve been to this year. Anytime he gets the ball whole crowd shouting come on the bull !!! He is like he has been around since 2018 and the lynchpin of the team. Even kk fans called him the bull.

most pod casts hype him up too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,268 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I'de have O'Dailigh ahead of him. Not that one is better than the other but O'Dailigh offers something different. He is more like those pacey goal hungry lads that Cork have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Greensoup

4games over the last 4 weekends, a dead rubber and probably in the middle of the last heavy training block look to have taken the spring out of a lot of the lads both physically but also mentally. Still a few lads look well off where they’d like to be. Good to see Darragh O’D back as well his work rate and ball into forwards will be needed in the next few months. Are there places up for grabs? Next few weeks training will answer that.

I don't think JK will be overly concerned with the Wexford result. League form will count for very little come championship. Interestingly PP have now made Cork 7/5 favs or the All Ireland with Limerick @9/5. Keeping a team that has won 5 All Ireland motivated is the hardest job and I think this is exactly where JK wants to be. I would say there is 7/8 places up for grabs so I'd imagine in house training matches will be intense. I guess what will be a little disappointing is that none of the fringe players are definite starters. Barry Murphy, Adam English and Shane O'Brien in patches have done will possibly start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,268 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I think English has definitely done enough. Was our best attacking player in the league. Murphy will probably depend on who is available in the backs.

A great win for the 20s. Matthew Fitzgerald and Fintan Fitzgerald look like real good prospects.

I thought they were very good. Good first touch and fought well. Should have been ahead by 3-4 at half time but for a few poor wides. What was Tipp goalie doing for second goal, seemed to be out in the right for no reason? There might be a couple out of this group for the future. Fitzgerald very fast, looks a real prospect

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,268 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Fitzgerald was Ard School captain and now the same for the u20's so he is certainly on the right path so far.

was thinking that myself at the weekend that football scoring should be presented like Aussie rules with the points total follows by 0-0-0 format

been to a few football matches here in Kildare in the new format and the referee doesn’t even always do the 2 hands signal so it’s not clear to the supporters if it’s a 2 pointer or not bar every on the line asking each other 😂

As well as some nice touches, great determination shown to get the win

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭biglad40isback

at least Portugal warm weather camp will be hot this year unlike last year for the boys

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,057 ✭✭✭einn32

Thats great. It rained a lot last year for them. Great win for the 20s.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭Iecrawfc

Great to see the u20s besting Tipp away, and a good Tipp team too. Pleased to see the improvement in the players from u17 showing player development is working too, as long as are competitive at u17 and can develop the players from there to u20 there should be a continuing line of players coming through. Loftus has shown himself to be a very good coach at u17 and now at u20 level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Shocs24

Jesus the Tipp posters are nearly in meltdown over last nights loss 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 146 ✭✭HurlingBoy

Great win for the U20s. Seems mad that the bookies had Limerick 11/1 to win the game and +9 on the handicap. At a minimum with all the great work done in the academies in recent years Limerick teams will be well organised. The Tipp players on the senior team are still not proven in the championship so those odds seemed strange.
