The Israeli government has issued a notice for thousands of African migrants to leave the country or face imprisonment.

The migrants will be given up to $3,500 (£2,600) for leaving within the next 90 days.

They will be given the option of going to their home country or third countries.

If they do not leave, the Israeli authorities have threatened that they will start jailing them from April.

A case of history repeating itself ?

Not going to get in to the rights or wrongs of it but doesn't Israel have a policy of accepting anyone of the Jewish faith? What if these migrants converted?

It could actually make it easier, they will just be detained until they are deported to where ever they came from..

I thought Australia sorted this out stat, by placing asylum seekers initially to Papua New Guinea or some other Island offshore.

No worries as they say. And no more undocumented asylum seekers either.

They got no vitriol for doing this either did they?

Now, imagine the uproar if what the "democratic" state of Israel is doing to 'African migrants' were replicated in, say, Ireland or other states that are considered to be genuinely democratic states?

Israel, the apartheid state that we cannot describe as such, is a law unto itself, and if we expect to hold them to liberal democratic norms and values, we can expect to be called "anti-Semitic".

You’re correct. Interesting case here between conservative Jews supporting an African migrant from a Jewish tribe who was deported by the interior ministry despite the tribe being recognised Jewish community.

    http://www.haaretz.com/amp/israel-news/.premium-1.833231
The Law of Return allows any individual who has converted to Judaism to immigrate to Israel and receive Israeli citizenship, provided he or she has been converted in a “recognized Jewish community.” In April 2016, the Jewish Agency ruled that the Abayudaya is a “recognized” Jewish community. In theory, then, any member of the community is eligible to immigrate to Israel, not to mention visit the country.

You might want to look into that again, there was huge problems with it, not least that the PNG supreme court ruled that it was illegal, and at worst the treatment of the people in the detention centers was so bad the Aussie gov agreed to pay 70 million Dollarydoos in compo on the condition that they can claim no liability

    the BBC being typically vague

Bit rich considering the Jews lecture Europeans to take in migrants.

"The Jews" don't all support the behaviour of the state of Israel which would be Zionist in nature, an offshoot of Judaism rather than representative of the faith as a whole.
You'd have to question the logic of imprisonment of migrants, surely deportation is what they'd be better off implementing a policy of is they want them out of their country.

Israel is the only democratic habitable country in the middle east. It is surrounded by Muslim countries who want to push it in to the sea. In Saudi Arabia for example, a country much much bigger than Israel, it is against the law to build a Christian church. Never mind equal rights for women.

Sounds like a common sense policy to me.

Perhaps Ireland could do the same in relation to our own illegal immigrants.

A democratic habitable County as long as you don't identify as Palestinian, if you're a Palestinian or even a Christian you're fair game for all types of discrimination and abuse.
The crap that goes on in Muslim nations is appalling and needs to change but Israel is no paragon of virtue by comparison.

We can’t be kinda gay and adopt all their ideas about democracy and then anti gay and against their inbuilt invention of homosexuality. We’d look like we’re Bi. And nobody likes de Bi’s

Honestly I think Israel does deserve the larger amount of criticism it gets over neighbouring muslims nations which are also horrible and corrupt. But many of them are unashamedly authoritarian while Israel acts as though its a democratic and liberal country like european ones, when its not much better than them. Also considering the reason for the formation of the country in the first place makes this even more hypocritical and sickening, the fact that the new israeli jews were refugees, that they were persecuted and removed form their homeland in europe. You'd think they of all countries would be more kind to refugees than other countries

They are kind to Jewish refugees. And are about the only country in the world to be so. Hard to blame them, given many of their ancestors were exterminated only a few generations ago.

There are plenty of Muslim countries in the world, nearly all of them much larger than Israel, which could take in Muslim refugees. How many of the choose to do so?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,633 ✭✭✭✭Widdershins

How awful of them to actually pay illegal immigrants to leave and ultimately put them in jail for breaking the law if they refuse after some time and refuse the offer of money to go. Just terrible, wow.

Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon took in literally millions and millions of refugees and far more than any european country did. Maybe the refugees won't be living in as good conditions as in european refugee centres, but still..they tried. They're not the wealthiest countries

    Syrian refugees alone-
Lebanon has over two million, Turkey has over three million, jordan over one and a quarter million, Saudi has half a million, UAe and iraq about 250,000 each, egypt around 100,000.

    Any other crap?

If this is accurate, then I don't blame them and fair play to them.

The problem these days is if deportation is the worst you expect you may as well chance it, if ya get caught and sent home it's always worth sneaking back in.

Every nation should have such a policy from South America, to Europe, to the few decent functioning Africans that no doubt experience it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,549 ✭✭✭maryishere

Btw I don't disagree with what Israel is doing. Just find it mad when Jews like Barbara Spectre and George Soros demand we open our borders to one and all.

I'm not sure on Spectre, but are Israel not exactly fans of Soros?

To be honest I know it's teh "Jewish State" but every nation has its fools and downright traitors
