Flight Compensation question

An Aer Lingus Regional(Stobart Air) flight that was due to travel from Shannon to Birmingham went off 5 hours late.
It was only as the passengers were about to board that we were told that there was a technical issue and that we would be waiting another 40 minutes.

After another 1.5 hrs we were told that it would be another 2 hrs at least before an engineer could come to fix the issue, it was also at this stage that we were told that the issue was caused by a bird strike.
Some passengers booked on the next days flight instead after hearing of the delay.

I have not claimed compensation before but the bird strike issue certainly rings alarm bells as this can be deemed as outside of the airlines control. Has anybody else made a similar compensation claim before and how do you go about making such a claim?
