While Geology / Earth Sciences has always been a foundational science, it also seems to have attracted writers who have blended this with descriptions of landscapes and ages past that are excellent works considered just as literature. One example is the writings of John McPhee mixing musings and geological field trips descriptions in such books as "Assembling California".

Some would describe this as the phenomenology of landscape.
It's a subject that invites much debate. There are elements that are valuable, and others that are questionable.

Descriptive authors such as T.E. Lawrence in Seven Pillars of Wisdom relied heavily upon geology & geography to describe the setting throughout their works.
