When to pass log book to insurer in a write off case?

I was rear ended and the other driver has admitted full liability. Her insurance said my car was an economical write off and would be in touch about the valuation. Meanwhile, they want me to surrender the log book already. Do I really need to do it already now? Should I not agree on the car value first?

Do nothing until a value is agreed. If they want it to prove ownership send them a photocopy/scan of it.

If a car is written off, my understanding is that the insurance company which compensates the owner sells the wreck 'into the trade' for it's scrap value. But what protection has the previous owner got from some cowboy garage patching it up, putting it back on the road and selling it to a boy racer who in all probability won't be too bothered about re-registering it?

They may require sight of the VLC in order to verify the specification and details of the vehicle. I agree though, do not send the original until everything is agreed.
