at long last its snowing in cork city! Snow shield has been broken (for now), can see some clear ice on the cars slightly sticking. The road etc is far to wet for anything to stick though, would have to snow for quite a while id say.

EDIT: As i say that the roof and bonnets of cars are white. It looks almost like a smoke/dust with some balls falling, very strange and windy!

    shield down!

its a very dusty sort of snow isn't it? Looks almost like smoke with some white bits in, blowing all over the place though very windy!

Wet snow / sleet I. Dublin city centre. The snow hasn't really got going with any great zeal, just intermittent light stuff that stops as soon as it starts

This is a bit of a crossover post from the Fionn thread but these two threads cannot easily be separated out at this point ... conditions in west Munster are likely to be full on level 2 and possibly level 3 (red alert) now to midnight, some very strong wind gusts have been reported at various locations including the offshore M6 buoy, and this will interact with the showers of various forms to produce possible very hazardous blizzard conditions or white-out from hail showers and resulting slippery road surfaces -- would advise extreme caution if travelling anywhere tonight but especially in exposed west coast and southwest locations.

If reading this thread, take into account it is level one alert for snow showers on a general basis but locally level two and this blends with the level two to possibly three wind situation. Also there is a very high threat of coastal flooding and boulders coming up over seawalls in places like Lahinch, exposed spots in Kerry and west Cork. Be on high alert.

So is it fair to say that while the GFS is notorious for overdoing snow on their charts, that it was still closer to the mark than the ECM regarding snow potential from this westerly over Ireland?

Brief wet snow shower in clonmel

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,485 ✭✭✭harr

Totally white in the space of 20 minutes here ( Laois/kildare border) roads are brutal.
Stoped now but temperature is around -1 according to car.

Not surprised by the amount of convection to be honest..this is a highly unstable PM flow. Uppers at the 500 hpa level are below -40 over the northern half of the country. Could be impressive accumulations over high ground in the North

hasn't snowed here since the 4pm shower. Much of what fell has thawed, still some snow in the garden but its dissapeared from paths and roads. The remaining snow is now starting to freeze. Could be some dangerous driving counditions with slush and surface water starting to freeze.
