I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15 (model under graphics problem recall). I'm outside the 4 year limit for Apple to repair it.

In the past 2 days, it started randomly going to black screen during boot up, sometimes after the login screen but sometimes I don't even get an apple logo on screen. The same happens even if I boot from an external OSX usb installer. Even with internet recovery, it crashes before I can connect to WiFI. It did boot fully once and I made a new time machine backup. I used it normally for an hour, but then tried to reboot and now nothing. It did boot to Windows bootcamp partition once, but cant do it again. I reset SMC and NVRAM also.

Does anyone have any insight that might help please? Any suggestions for a good independent apple repair specialist that could take a look without a big diagnostic fee?

    Thanks

If you bought it from Apple directly then your 6 years consumer laws apply, especially since they have already admitted something was wrong. Regardless of when that replacement program ended

Which reseller? Your consumer law applies there too, just a different channel and may be more convoluted

Amazon in the US, so I reckon I don't have much of an option...

Ah ok! No consumer law protection then!

Best of luck with finding a fix!

Bit of a stretch to expect cover on a 5 year old laptop...

Having used Macs for over 15 years, I find Apple's warranty and aftercare exceptional. I have a MacBook from 2010 that has had several repairs and parts replaced for free, including once when living abroad.

A friend bought his MacBook Pro in USA but lives in Europe and has had repairs done under warranty in his local Apple Store, although it was only 3 years old.

It's definitely worth calling Apple and explaining the situation. If they won't cover the full cost, they may waive part of the fee, e.g. parts but not labour. No harm in trying.

Not if the law says up to 6 years.

In this case it would be a very easy Consumer law claim since the issue was officially recognized with the Graphics card on this model by Apple and even had free repairs carried for a defined period that has now ended. This is totally separate though.

Here, the user has a faulty Graphics card and needs replacing, as it was a faulty part from day 1, it fulfills the 6 years consumer law of claiming if the issue was present within the first 6 months.

It was purchased in the States. Our consumer law doesn’t apply.

I'm aware of that look at my third response...hence my reply above.....

I was explaining how 6 years of consumer law exists to the OP as they said 5 years is a long time......
