Well that was wonderful. They only brushed on John Coltrane but gave him the soundtrack at the end. It spent a lot of time with Art Blakey - there's probably a good reason for that.

That Adam Buxton show up above is a Chistmas show in November at 3am, which is probably too early and too late. But here's the Gaz Coombes 'I Believe In Father Christmas' as featured in that show, lovely stuff.

Neil Brand's Sound Of Song on BBC4 was a real eye-opener, or rather ear opener.

Recording singers with modern technology and early 20th century and then playing it back...
You assume the voices you hear on recordings are how they sounded with those 'plummy' voices but that is a distortion in tone due to the recording process.
By the eve of the first world war, the recording technology had advanced to the point where the recording was a faithful reproduction of the original voice.

And, in a pre walkman and iPod era, I can understand why the listening booths in train stations where commuters could kill time waiting for their train by listening to music were so popular - despite the communal headphones :(

The Junior Eurovision voting is like a car crash

Kids apeing the grown ups falling over themselves to say how great the show was before they give the points in their best MTV accents

Neither Ireland nor Wales doing much in the scores

Poland (where the thing was being held) jumped ahead on the audience vote at the very end, pipping the Kazakhstan lad who looks very like Kim Jong-Il

Weird contest, most of the big countries didn't bother.

Pretty sure I can count the number of pre-WWI voice recordings I've heard on the fingers of one finger.
