Just before they split I saw Supergrass do a cracking gig in one of Dublin's smaller venues.

The stage was so small there wasn't enough room for their name to be spelt out correctly.

    It looked like

    UPERGRAS
    S.......... S

    were playing.

Tragically comedic in its own way.

If they ever make Spinal Tap II, they can have that.

Surely to have a hit record, you have to be different from the rest and not sound like the rest of the charts?

    Be pro-active rather than reactive.

For example, Richie Kavanagh sounded like no one else in 1996...result? Number one.

    :pac:

Bizarrely, a chancer called Noel Furlong (not Graham Norton's Priest in Father Ted) did a carbon copy of Richie's song and got into the Top 5 at the same time. Gerry Ryan used to play both versions every day. Good times.

One of the best gigs I ever went to was Supergrass, supported by Spacehog :D

A screen came down before they came on showing Looney Tunes cartoons - suddenly, the screen dropped and there they were! Beats having to watch a roadie go ‘check, check, one, two’ into the mic!

See what Trevor and Simon did there, folks?

    Confusing Jarvis with Joe Cocker.

Ah, the good ole days of outsider misfits making it to Saturday morning kids TV :)

Trev and Simon are still going, they did an extended interview on Richard Herring's podcast last month. I used to love them on the Saturday mornings.

Who is this mysterious ‘Sally’ who appeared to be the subject of every indie song in the early 90’s?

Any Sally Cinnamons out there, let us know!

Any Sally Cinnamons out there, let us know!

I heard Noel saying once (might say it on that, I'm not watching it) that the Sally in Don't Look Back In Anger wasn't a person, was just some words that went with a tune. Then I suddenly realised this applied to every Oasis song. None of them mean anything or make any sense. All nonsense about mind's eyes and better ways. I've never really been able to look at them the same way since.

    Such a smoothie, Bryan Ferry.

I’m surprised he hasn’t just slid off that sofa and across the floor like an eel.

Have Skinner and Bates been hitting the BBC bar?

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

"Madonna is Number One, of course, with 'In The Groove' "

That's not even the name of the song.

Bates gets so many names of songs and artists wrong, he really was a lazy presenter.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40,061 ✭✭✭✭Harry Palmr

Red Button finally has some good dirty white boys music on it - 80s hard rock and metal mix lasting for as long as there is nothing else on that channel. Sara Cox is the presenter talking with Joe Elliot and Phil Collen of da Leps in front of small audience.

Just checking Skid's listings again there.

I enjoyed greatly the fact that there's a brief synopsis of everything* - bit of reading, for anyone who might find the programme interesting - right up until

    "Adele in New York City"
    -

What could she be doing there? Shopping? Feeding the birds in Central Park? Robbing Wall St with a fleet of dumper trucks after setting up an elaborate and entirely plausible distraction for the NYPD?

Or did you just figure that she's just doing her usual warbling, and anyway no one really cares, she's lucky to even get a mention in this thread?

2.10am Bee Gees In Our Time (Sky Arts)
    As Saturday

Hopefully there's something there to interest you. I thought L7 were only known for bareing all on The Word on Channel 4, but Sky Arts have given them a full show. What a time to be alive.

Also, I think that Pat Shortt show is the one which has a clip of the time BB King was interviewed by BiBi Baskin on RTE. I mean, that's worth several years licence fee by itself, isn't it?

Finally, more evidence that BBC2's Newsnight would much rather be a Music Show came last week when Suede's Brett Anderson dropped in for a long chat with Kirsty Wark about his new autobiography. I welcome this kind of thing and I say RTE's PrimeTime would be far more watchable if Miriam O'Callaghan would occasionally take a break from the politics. Go on Mir, hows about a retrospective on the legacy of Stiff Little Fingers next week?
