Fair play. As an aside i read somewhere that Hall & Oates are the biggest selling duo of all time. I’m staggered that this could possibly be true but supposedly it is.

Mikey's Sailor's Hornpipe Blue Peter theme got a ten year run before they replaced it with a dreadful dirge. Still, good royalties while it lasted

Dear God, the Yes/No People version... fairly remarkable that it lasted five years.

David Arnold's version was not only a vast improvement - but it also coincided with what many regard as a golden period for the show. It's certainly hard to disagree that Konnie, Matt, Simon and Liz were a superb team - if they hadn't been, Matt probably wouldn't be presenting The One Show and Countryfile, and Konnie probably wouldn't be Mrs Charlie Brooker. :D

Of course, BP is 60 this year - and also celebrated its 5,000th episode a few months ago, for which they used this mash-up... :D

I'm going to post this here as it's in good company. Saw T'Pau on an 80's Totp rerun last week. Started watching masterchef tonight and Carol Decker is on it so I had a look at a few vids on youtube.

I agree with the sentiment that chart pop music in general started to go downhill around 86 but, dammit, there were some crackers like the below.

Watched some recent live vids too and she's still got it. Impressive given she's hitting 60! Band are great too.

Hi there, I think it's a decent looking line up this weekend which is nice - Sky Arts has their new series on Drumming which dovetails nicely with their film on Clem Burke of Blondie.

There's an interesting looking show on TG4 about when Alan Lomax toured Ireland to capture our disappearing folk music, while BBC4 stays with the repeats, some of which are decent ...

    Thursday
7am Kylie Minogue Live at Hyde Park (BBC Red Button, repeated on Loop all day)

    4pm Soundbreaking (Sky Arts)
The start of a repeat run of the very good series about the technical evolution of sound recording
"Featuring more than 160 original interviews with some of the most celebrated recording artists, producers, and music industry pioneers of all time, Soundbreaking charts a century’s worth of innovation and experimentation, and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the birth of brand new sounds. From the Beatles’ groundbreaking use of multi-track technology to the synthesized stylings of Stevie Wonder, from disco-era drum machines to the modern art of sampling, the series highlights the dynamic tension between the artificial and the natural––between the man-made and the god-given––and explores the way in which that tension has continuously redefined not only what we listen to and how we listen to it, but our very sense of what music is and can be. In the end, Soundbreaking makes us hear the songs we love in a whole new way, and illuminates the sonic alchemy by which the music we listen to becomes a fundamental part of who we are."
    http://soundbreaking.com/about-the-series/
Ep 1/8 The Recording Artist Documentary tracing the history of music recording, beginning with a look at the production work of George Martin, Phil Spector, Rick Rubin, Joni Mitchell and Prince

11pm Roger Waters - The Wall (Sky Arts)
The musician performs the Pink Floyd album in full in an elaborately staged theatrical production

12.05am Live From Abbey Road Classics (Channel 4)
featuring performances by US singer-songwriter John Mayer and country folk star Shawn Colvin

1am Arena: American Epic - The Sessions (BBC4)
Elton John, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Alabama Shakes, Jack White, Nas, Ana Gabriel, Beck, Los Lobos and Steve Martin are among the modern artists who test their skills against the demands of the recording machine that literally made American music. There are no edits, no overdubs, and no retakes, and the disc only allows for three minutes of recording time. Despite these limitations, today's recordings for American Epic have one advantage - the freshly recorded sound is crystal clear and of an astonishing depth, transporting listeners vividly into the past - and the future. Narrated by Robert Redford

    Friday
6am Lenny Kravitz and All Saints Live from Hyde Park (BBC Red Button, repeated on Loop for rest of the day)

6.20am The Three Tenors: Birth Of A Legend (Sky Arts)
The concert from July 1990 in which Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti joined forces at the ancient baths of Caracalla in Rome

    Ep 1 As Thursday

    8pm & 1.25am Queens of Soul (BBC4)
A compilation of archive footage to celebrate the critically-acclaimed female singers whose voices have come to define the soul genre, including Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight, Randy Crawford, Angie Stone, Mary J Blige and Beyonce. Seeing as Beyonce is in it, lets have a look at the time Weeshie Fogarty of Radio Kerry first heard about her.

8pm Discovering Music - Blondie (Sky Arts)

8.30pm Video Killed The Radio Star - Blondie (Sky Arts)

9pm & 12.45am The Art of Drumming (Sky Arts) New!

    9pm & 2.25am Classic Albums: Amy Winehouse - Back To Black (BBC4)
The making of Back to Black, the second and final studio album by singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, which was released in October 2006 to wide critical and commercial acclaim. Featuring singles Rehab, You Know I'm No Good, Back to Black, Tears Dry on Their Own and Love Is a Losing Game, the record has sold almost four million copies and is currently 13th in the list of best-selling albums in the UK

The story of the singer-songwriter's acoustic performance on Irish TV show Other Voices, filmed at St James's Church in the remote south-western town of Dingle in 2006. Featuring interviews with some of the people she met on that day, including taxi driver Paddy Kennedy, her bass player Dale Davis and the Rev Mairt Hanley of the Other Voices church

Anybody spot the skateboard right next to the feet of the A-Ha keyboard player?

He’ll be hunting high and low for an accident claim.

    Sorry.

Hands down, my favourite song about driving from Liverpool to Manchester using the M62. :)

    Without due care and attention

    How many points is that?

The Roman Catholic Church is beyond despicable, it laughs at us as we pay for its crimes. It cares not a jot for the lives it has ruined.

I thought that Alan Lomax documentary was very interesting (it is repeated on TG4 Wednesday at 10.30pm, also on the TG4 catch up service)

Séamus Ennis, the legendary Uileann piper, had already been doing great work touring the country for the Folklore Commission making wax recordings. Lomax was introduced to him and they travelled the roads using Lomax's superior recording devices and Ennis's knowledge of where the musicians were to be found.

A poster on thejournal.ie gave a link to this archive where you can play copies of the recordings Lomax made in Ireland (and elsewhere) http://research.culturalequity.org/get-audio-ix.do?ix=recording&id=IE&idType=countryCode&sortBy=abc
