When I went back to college at 35. I mentioned one day the Christmas Eve storm in 1997, and a classmate replied "Mam and dad still talk about that too."

On top of this I recall another incident in college at 35; Biology lecture, and I brought up the death of Leah Betts, which happened when I was a teenager. My lecturer asked what year, and I estimated at 1995, and she said "I was making my first holy communion then".

At age 31 I was very excited to be going to see my favourite band live (again), the Manic Street Preachers. My friends had never heard of them. I mentioned If You Tolerate This, and one friend recognised it. The other didn't. I said "It was a huge hit in 1998?" and he replied "I was five."

When the DJs/presenters on Spin South West talks about “back in the day”/“Old School” and In fact they mean 2010

I was never "with it" either.

I don't even remember the Christmas Eve storm of 1997 you're talking about. Not because I was too young, I was well into adulthood. But I've no memory of it.

I do wonder about the "where were you when" a significant event happened that there are adults alive too young to remember 9/11, and will soon be adults alive who weren't even alive during 9/11.

Thinking that the kids born in the year 2000 will be 18 this year and can go to pub drinking/etc.

If it's any consolation, they were probably knacker drinking in a field in 2016.

I want to be like Clint Eastwood in gran Torino, sitting out on the porch with a few cans scowling at the young wans but as this is Ireland I don't have a porch and anyway the weather is ****.

He was actually scowling at Koreans I think. You definitely can't do that.

He also had a shotgun that he liked to wave around. DEFINITELY don't do that.

I think the first time I began to realise I wasn't with "it" anymore was the rise of Snapchat.

    Is it not actually SnatchChat?
No wonder I could never find the app or see random snatch!

When lads my age are either daddies,in jail, coke heads or dead.... I think I'm not in with "it" and hope to keep it that way.

I think I stopped understanding what was going on when I was about 21 and everyone started wearing skinny jeans, from then on it just got progressively worse. Though I've never really been with it, I hated nightclubs in my teens, I usually do my own thing, not to be alternative or stand out, it's just I enjoy what I enjoy, whether it's in or out of fashion is irrelevant to me. (aside from the fact that it might make things more difficult to buy, like I was glad when the big earmuff-like headphones came into fashion because those little ones that go in your ears drive me mad and always fall out.) I've never used instagram but I gather it's just about pictures? I tried snapchat and hated it. I'm not even entirely sure what pinterest is, I'm definitely losing the battle with technology and social media, and I'm 29 ffs.

The day i realised that I wasn't with it was the day I discovered that the fellas don't ask the girls to dance any more.

Well that's the latest according to my daughter when I asked her did anyone ask you to dance she looked at me as if I had 2 heads

Guards, when they started looking like fourteen year olds playing cops and robbers. Retired to my pipe and slippers then..

I'm only 34 so hardly long in the tooth but I seen two Gardaí today and I was tempted to buy them a bottle of Biactol each!

Instagram, snapchat, little understanding and no interest in it. Twitter, I'm still getting to grips with.

Whilst my mid twenties were probably the best years of my life, not sure I would want to be that age or late teens anymore. With young people now struggling with their identity, and where you can now be Pan, Fluid, and how many others, as well as Bi, Gay, or Straight. Where gender stereotypes and neutral is also a thing, it can be a challenge for people of an older generation, my generation if I am being honest.

Also where anyone under the age of 25 is a kid, I'm 40 this year, and am quite happy in a quiet pub, with my pint, and in bed before 10 on a work night. It's a rapidly changing world, and more eye opening than ever before.

    :(

Scary strong bit of deja vu going on here.Have I read the opening paragraph before or is it just me.Feckin hell.

Anyway my 7 year old daughter put me in my box last week when she said I should stop wearing tight tops. My wife asked her why and she said only daddies with hair wear tight tops.

I think the opening line is a quote from some show or movie

I was just wondering the other day what the procedure and terminology is now. It hasn't changed since I was last out as a teenager, from the sounds of it.

Anyway, I'm another one who was never interested in whatever was it at the time.

Last year for me. I teach some modules on a Plc Music course. Last year was the first time I ever came across an aspiring ‘professional musician’ who had never heard of the Beatles, and who had never paid for music. Not a cd. Not a streaming subscription. Not even a download of a single track.

Wonder where she was going to get paid from in her ‘professional musician’ career...

I find that one tough to believe. You mean she had literally never heard of the band in her entire life? They are referenced constantly.

I went back to college at 27 and the conversation turned to tattoos with my classmates....I mentioned different fads coming and going and said something along the lines of dolphins and barbed wire being popular in the 90's....blank faces all round

Two years ago I saw a music industry top ten earners for the year list. I knew four of the acts.

I had never heard of Taylor Swift, and there she was with 50 million + earnings for the year.

I felt the need to google the name, I didn't even know if Taylor Swift was a man or a woman

I must admit, I thought she was messing. But no, a cultural vacuum. If it wasn't on reality tv it didn't happen.

Used to work in a youth centre a few years ago and during a music workshop i was running when the subject of September 11th came up (the anniversary was that week) i was asked what it was like to watch on live tv. That might have been it right there for a lot of us but one of the girls who was in the group said without the slightest bit of sarcasm "my mam said i was born in between the two towers falling". I naturally, bust out laughing because i thought it was a joke that completely went over my head but there wasnt a laugh in the room.

That was the moment that i realised she wasn't lying and was actually born on September 11th 2001, up until that moment i did not think it was possible for people to be alive who did not remember that.

Oh and other things i learned from the youths like LIT AF, straight up fire, 100, FML.

Lol and rofl just doesn't cut it any more lads. Little bastards.

The 'chung wans' now are far too engrossed with reality shows, so-called celebrities and their Instagram feed to rebel against anything.

    There were a number of moments;

Had to have FOMO explained to me
    Found Snapchat bizarre
Assumed being on Tinder was weird
Felt unsettled by lads wearing skinny jeans
Felt even more unsettled by lads showing off their ankles with trousers too short
Made a joke that was now very non PC
Realised that the period 1996 to about 2002 was the last epoch of a golden era before the world was taken over by over sensitive cry babies

I knew I was properly getting out of touch when it came to that point in the night, I would rather go home than go to the nightclub to keep drinking.

The amount of time I spend online means that I see all of the stupid acronyms that emerge, though I guess in my mind they're all being used ironically. Even though they're probably not.

I guess snapchat is probably the turning point. If I was 16 I suppose I'd understand the appeal of spamming eachother with stupid pictures. If someone sends more than 3 stupid pictures in a row on our WhatsApp group, they get kicked. Soft porn, slagging and good jokes only, thanks.

Also skinny jeans. Probably nothing new for anyone who grew up in the 80s, but I grew up when baggy was the thing, and backwards sometimes too. I cannot imagine myself concealing my testicles inside my body cavity in order to get my jeans on.

I know I'm not with "it" because I don't understand the present slang. Things that are "lit" are not on fire, they're what I would call "cool", "dope" is not something you smoke, it now also means "cool". A lot of the time, when I witness a conversation between young people I am totally bewildered. I'm 30. I'm in college and there's people in the class only 3-5 years younger than me and we may as well be from different planets.
I have also never gotten into Twitter or Snapchat. I have an Instagram account that I'm very active on but other than that, social media baffles me. I often see things on the "explore" tab on instagram posted by people younger than me, which I then have to Google to understand.

When discussing football with a colleague of similar vintage & a few others in work one day and it moved onto Euro 88 & Italia 90 & two of the technicians informed us that neither of them had been born when Ray Houghton had put the ball into the english net and one of them was born a few days after David O'Learys penalty... I knew then the game was up for me.

Music is another thing. I remember growing up religiously watching TOTP & knowing all the No.1s going back donkeys... when that became impossible due to all sorts of noise masquerading as music started popping up & I couldnt tell you who was No.1 even if I'd just heard the thing on't radio I knew I had turned into one of those 'Music was better in my day' * people and was officially past it.

Was talking with younger coworkers and telling a story. I was trying to explain about a girl looking sophisticated and sexy at a bar. The image I had in my head was Kim Basinger in LA Confidential. When I said like 'Kim Basinger' they all just laughed at referencing her as sexy, like I was talking about some aul' one, which I suppose I was in their eyes ...

Ha. Straight up fire = LIT AF = Lit as **** = hot = trendy.

100 = 100/100 = the best that best could be. The littest of all ****ing fires.

Thats how my brain worked those algorithms out anyway.

Turns out when i asked the teenagers, they're basically speaking emojis, the 100 emoji is something i'd see on twitter since then, but they actually use to describe something in regular conversation. "Its so 100" "Its straight up FIRE" "Its LIT AF". The last one being more worrying than the rest as they actually don't say "as ****" instead they say AFFFF.

These are the future lads and lassies, buckle up because its going to get messy.
