I am thinking starting a life insurance policy for myself, is a medical examination required in order to get a policy? Thanks in advance

Not in all cases, very much dependant on level of cover, age and answers on the application.

For the average young person with a pretty clean medical history and run of the mill amount and term it would be the exception rather than the rule.

As above, the need for a medical is initially calculated based on your age and the level of cover you are looking for (the term doesn't play a part). At the moment for example, a 45 year old could get €550-600k cover without a medical if they have no problems with their health. A medical may be required however if you have certain medical conditions, certain family medical history issues or are deemed to be overweight.

They will usually ask you to fill in your height and weight on the application, if your in the obese or high end overweight they might seek medical examination. If you have any medical procedures/operations in the past you normally have to list them, from this they will deem if you need to undergo a medical, as mentioned family history too they will ask if anyone in your family suffered from certain conditions.
