Should I walk back to the store and throw it in their faces screaming "You can make this for under a fiver you thieving b****ds!" and then throw a screaming tantrum on the ground.

Is that what some people have said they are going to do? A bit extreme and certainly childish.

Actually just a thought, are the games announced so far single player only? Presumably you'd need a second kit (and extra joy cons) for local multiplayer. For anyone with more than one child anyway.

To be honest, the backpack robot kit has the same aesthetic and production values (both good and bad) as the Kickpuncher sequel so you may be on to something.

70 euro does sound like a lot of money for what it is (in theory). But then I think of the fact I know people who go out on a regular basis and spend 120 euro + on alcohol and taxis on a night out that makes them violently sick from hangovers the day after, and I don't feel so bad about it.

GameStop are giving €50 credit for any Switch game traded in against Labo. Yes it's GameStop and yes they're €10 more expensive...but I'm sure there are plenty of cheap games to be picked up for this deal. I was about to trade in The Batman Telltale game and LA Noire to cex for around €50 credit, now I'll get €100!

Nintendo Labo also isn’t intended to be an answer to VR. That’s according to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, who spoke with Toronto Sun about the new initiative.

    Reggie told the publication:

“It’s not meant to be some sort of competitive answer (to virtual reality). It’s meant to be something totally unique, totally unexpected.”

“We do believe that there will be experimentation that some of these communities will do on their own. And from our perspective that’s a good thing.”

“At the core of everything we do, the goal is to make people smile.”

    Great quote, I love Reggie.

Project Giant Robot has been a running sideshow joke of Miyamoto's for years. He's finally got his wish after all this time, not only by charging €90 for a project that probably has no more depth than the other infamous twin experiment, Star Fox Guard, but also by dressing people up to look like prats.

Someone's got to pay the bills for all those years of experimentation. Think about that, I can guarantee this game will not be remembered in any GOTY award ceremony, stick some paper to your body(that costs probably €5 at most) and pay €90? WTF?

I was wondering how long it's take you to complain about this.

It's not for me but I bet my nieces and nephews would love it.

A much closer look at the 'infrared' view from the joy-con on the screen when using the RC Car.

At first I was like: lol Nintendo, you are drunk, go home.

Then I looked more carefully at actual things made out of cardboard: Damn, that looks like a very complicated and interesting stuff. The creations mechanics themselves are very damn impressive.

So I came to conclusion: I will not going to buy this, but someone will have a kick out of it. At least nintendo thinking outside the box. :pac:

Pachter Actually ‘Mentioned’ Nintendo Labo in 2012: Fans Aren’t So stupid To Buy a Piece of Cardboard – Satire
“I don’t think Nintendo fans are so stupid they would buy a piece of cardboard”, Pachter said on Bonus Round six years ago. “A box on the other hand, that says Nintendo on it, they probably would. Remember when you were a kid and you get gifts, and when you’re really little you like the box better than the gift? That’s how I think of Nintendo fanboys.”

Good to see you’re not being completely reductive about Labo.

On the eve of the announcement of the cardboard designer Nintendo Labo, the German rating agency USK, which sets age limits on video games and other entertainment content, received a copy of the system for review. Employees of the company told how, by mistake, they nearly threw Labo into the garbage.

A good few hands on expressions coming out about some of the Labo creations now.

One is the IR sensor used with the RC car can be used to detect presence/movement to follow you around.

Thats pretty damn impressive, for what most thought was just the zapper from a TV remote (well I did anyways).

Will be interesting to see if you can combine more than one pair of Joy-con when doing this programming.

Also, Nintendo won't say who is making the Labo software. There's a rumour that Retro Studios could be working on it, I hope that's not what they've been doing all this time.

That would be "Rareware making Kinect games" level of fall from grace!

Rare had fallen before that, no?
I mean, mostly pap on the Xbox was it not, in their post-Nintendo career.

They did nuts and bolts on the 360!

Didn't they also do Viva Pinata, which I heard was good. Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo were okay as well, I think.
Would've been great if Rare Replay came to the PC

    PF0 was utter cack.
Kameo was decent but very much a throwback title for Rare.

Viva Pinata, yeah, an odd one, a god game with some lovely visuals and an excellent tie-in TV show, tons of potential that was sadly wasted.
My pleasant memories of it being that my now 14 year old son, some 6'2" of him, was only around 3 at the time and we watched it together, how time flies!

Sorry, I know the image is terrible quality but it's the best there is at the moment. It's from the next issue of Famitsu and it looks like there's a tractor Labo coming at some point.

Haha might still convert my brother to allowing these for my nieces yet.

Wonder, if its a real Labo kit, what it "does"? Whats the hook using the Switch and Joy-cons?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,610 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

I suppose the Labo thing is much like the crafting/making scene with the Raspberry Pi, you've got a device with a touch display and you've got a pair of controllers that are not only detachable but also can act as sensors and actuators in their own right.
All that was needed then was imagination.

I think the big limiting factor is the inability to program your own projects, perhaps a new franchise Labo-Maker is incoming should Labo itself be a success.
A homebrew crafting kit, giving access to sensors and so on.
That could be massive, especially in schools and groups like Coder Dojo, a python type scripting system for the Switch?

    We shall see!

The North American Nintendo Labo website is now open.

    https://labo.nintendo.com/

There's some English videos, I'll post them, they're not as high quality as the Japanese videos but I'm sure there'll be higher quality trailers soon. Nintendo of Europe might release some later today at some stage when they're open for business.

That all looks very promising indeed.
I think the Variety pack will be for me, at least at first

Very surprised with how much you can do with each kit, the track editing in the Motorcycle is pretty impressive for the tools used. Plus I like the customization for the piano with the cutouts you slot in and the custom fish in the Fishing Rod, thats the kind of creative stuff they were promising.
