Climbing Nephin

Hello,

I am going to climb Nephin very soon, I overheard two people talking the last day.

One guy said since they built the new ESB substation access into the mountain proper is easier. he went on to say before this it was a long walk across bog to get to the climb its-self.

Question: Does anyone know detail of this route ?

Not sure if the new sub station gives a new access route but I never found it hard to access the climb over the boggy patch.

Can you tell me that route, or any route. I have never climbed and its on my list. First good weekend day and i am going climbing.

I normally park here and just head for the hills! Bit of bog to cross but it's never been a problem.

I do occasionally meet other people on the way down or up but I honestly don't know if the route I take is the same as others do.

Safe as in the place I park? I can't really comment, when parking there I'm normally in something held together with tec7, so it wouldn't attract thieves. It is pretty isolated but on a busy enough road, no houses that close by.

The climb is easy enough in that there are no rock faces to scale, like any view worth seeing you have to work for it. I had a 60 year old, unfit by their own admission, who managed to get to the top a few years ago. I wouldn't fancy doing it alone, if you get injured you really are on your own, it's not like Croagh Patrick where a flying priest will be along any minute to rescue you.

View on a clear day is spectacular, better than Croagh Patrick IMHO. Even on a cloudy day, getting above the cover is impressive.

From bofeenaun is the best point imo..stunning scenery. Check out yer man from walk west..he lives nearby and does groups..also there is an annual climb from.bofeenaun in march i think.

I climbed Nephin last May with a friend. Just in case anybody finds it useful, I watched a video on Youtube before climbing. I'm a new user so can't post links but when I search for "Nephin" its the first video which comes up. The video is by a guy called PATRICK ŻERKOWSKI.

The route used in this video starts in Pruglish forest off the R312. I thought seeing it on a video beforehand was a great help.

Also, there was a nice clip about climbing Nephin on Nationwide on RTE earlier this month, I think it was the episode from 8th January. It might still be on the RTE player.
