To be fair, I can see where weldoninhio is coming from with that observation. The show seems to be a soft reboot rather than a follow on from the movie (given that the wrap of from the film seems to be ignored; I guess it could be a prequel either, but I doubt it), reintroducing the characters, etc. so as not to alienate people who haven't seen the film. However it did feel a bit too familiar/rehashy having watched the film. Bit of a no-win situation IMHO, either you bore those returning to the characters, or alienate the new ones.

Dudara sums the same up pretty well:

Thats what I meant. The mask of the drug dealer, the bike chase through the english market etc.

Was the bike scene taken straight from the film (minus the part with the paint at the end)?

I think they are just trying to familiarise the audience with the movie for the first episode. Nothing wrong with that and gives a solid base to build on.

First half of the first episode was very poor. Just an exact same rehash as the movie. Second half was a good bit better. Has potential.

Presume they had to reintroduce the characters to new viewers. Most people won't have seen the film.

It’s a soft reboot for sure.

Had a watch of Episode 2 on the BBC player rather than waiting for next week - some absolutely cracking moments in the second episode, and despite it being a bit more subdued and slower paced than the first I think I enjoyed it more.

Yeah my first reaction was “ah I’ve seen all these scenes” but thinking about it it made sense on a lot of levels, not least financial, to introduce the characters that way. The two lads have a great chemistry, should be fun.

Never seen or heard of the movie still thought ep 1 was good. A little to cheesy in parts but enjoyed it.

Thought it was very good to be honest. Not seen the film. The only things that bothered me were stuff from growing up in Cork - only mixed school I could think of was protestant and only dubs I knew were taxi drivers.

Ep 2 is great, very funny!

Love the relationship between Conor and his mom, their dialogue is so natural and funny!

And for the love of god Dont look at their IMDb profile pics, it will ruin it for you!

I actually know the woman who played Mrs. McCarthy in Ep 2. I won't be able to look her in the eyes again. My eyes cannot unsee that!

I loved when somebody shouted prick in the yard when the principle was there.

See, if you didn't mention it, I wouldn't have got curious and ruined it for myself :D

Really annoyed how the first episode was like this weird half breed remix of the film, should have just continued on from it. PJ plays the principal now and was a totally different character in the film.

and they reused the most cringey, lame bit in the film, 'he makes me feel warm', no one says that about their mate, especially not in Ireland, and especially not tracksuit wearing skangers. and then 'I'd rather snort him', just way ott with all the bromance comments

First ep was just to familiarise people with the film a bit.

Found the second ep funnier. Its got a good heart.

Being from Cork the accents and reactions to situations are spot on. Went to school with lots of lads like these.

Reviews in the UK have been exceptional. Most giving it top recommendation especially specialist comedy sites.

Its been compared as a modern day laurel and hardy.

I think anyone has seen the film will see the elements used. It’s not a big deal. A far greater amount of people haven’t seen the film though and have seen the first episode.
The two lads have a brilliant chemistry and are naturally likeable and totally believable. As long as the writing and the jokes manage to stay on point it’ll be a resounding success. Already green lit for a second season is wonderful news and says good things about it and what’s to come.

Bishopstown Community School, Nagle Community College are both mixed

I don’t understand the criticism about ep1 reusing parts from the film. It’s very obviously a soft reboot, intended for people who hadn’t seen the film, as well as those who had. They’re going for a wider audience.

That said, I loved both episodes so far, brilliant stuff.

Just watched an episode.. Fairly cringeworthy.. Humour was lame.. Lots of swearing for effect... wooden predictable.. Yawn

St. Peter's Passage is mixed too I think.

Thought ep1 was awful tbh, not funny at all.

Thought the film was awful, but having seen the positive reaction to the first two episodes of the series online I figured I'd see if it had picked up.

Nope; just as bad if not worse. The second episode and the scenes involving the woeful P.J. Gallagher are chronic.

I was waiting for somebody to say that. The effect they were going for was accurately portraying the way these kids would normally speak. They did a good job of it too, the only way they could make it more accurate is add even more swearing :D

Second episode was better than the first alright, less cringy bromance crap.

Terence McSwiney too, which I presume is the fictional St Finans in the show.

What an awesome episode this week!!

Second episode was great too, I was laughing all the way through basically.

So it is not your cup of tea - that doesn't make it "awful"

I think The Office is the unfunniest comedy ever - but that doesn't mean its rubbish.

If everything was liked by everyone, then life would be utterly grey and boring.

I like that it's not just a straight comedy - episode 3 had some really sweet moments.

    I'm not crying, you're crying!
