34 eGolf this year? Wow. They sold what, 10 last year? And it sounds like dealers didn't want you in one and couldn't get a test of one.

If the price could just drop ever so slightly with better sales.

Outsold by an €93,000 Tesla though...

I don't understand why people still give VW any money.

Because, realistically, who gives a shít?

To elaborate slightly, if people were that concerned, they wouldn't be buying diesels in general either. Reality is, people don't really care.

Heard something and not sure how true that LIDL senior management that used to have Audi A8 now have Tesla model S and are BIK free. Could account for the high sales. Clever move really.
Hopefully have an i3 for a lend in next week or 2 for a few days

Because they had very aggressive campaign with good deals. Very low apr, scrapage, trade in bonus etc. When everyone still pushing 5.9% apr, they droped to 1.9% and even zero in some models. Smart move.

    1 | NISSAN | LEAF | 194

    3 | TESLA | MODEL S | 50
    4 | VOLKSWAGEN | E GOLF | 34

    6 | BMW | I3 | 24
    7 | TESLA | MODEL X | 16
    8 | NISSAN | NV200 PASSENGER | 1

I would say price (compared to the leaf) is hurting the Zoe. Its a lot more popular in Europe.

Still less than 1% of all sales?

I've been working in Renault over 3 years now and we'd sell one maybe two Zoes a year. I'm sure the top spec Zoe is just shy of 30k

Even with all the incentivising, the numbers are pathetic. I had a mad idea that I'd be buying an EV 2nd hand in a few years, but clearly this is unlikely if no-one but the wealthy and the fanboy is buying them now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,838 ✭✭✭Damien360

We replaced our 07 avensis this year and looked seriously into an EV. Even with tiny mileage (avensis only had 100k on it) the premium over petrol equivalent of the same model across all brands made no financial sense. Typical 6k over petrol model premium and that buys a lot of petrol over the life of the car.

Until pricing is truly brought down to match petrol equivalent it won't happen in large numbers in Ireland.

I think you have know it works for your use case, rather than simply buying them because everyone else does.

An EV would work well for me, I can't justify the high entry cost at the moment.

Same as myself. Doing about 15k a year I can't justify the cost difference from a €31k Golf Highline 1.0 to the eGolf at €37k on PCP as I wouldn't save enough fuel in 3 years. €3k fuel vs €6k car + charging costs

Not for much longer - Lidl moving to BMW all across Europe. BMW discounting by 50% off

The difference in performance is well worth the premium.

I have never seen anybody that didn't love how an ev delivers power.

Yeah heard while back from someone senior in Lidl Ireland that despite them buying 11000 Audis Europe wide in 2017 alone, AuDi were playing hardball on a new deal. Guess Lidl called their bluff-I'd say a certain Audi negotiator be getting a P45!

0-60 is 9.6 on the eGolf vs 9.9 on the 1.0 DSG, not much of a difference for 6 grand. The instant torque is fun and single gear is fun to drive but not worth it, to me anyway. Better off getting the 1.4 and even with the higher fuel, tax and insurance cost you'd still have change.

I'd happily consider an eGolf or GTE but as it stands they're too slow and too expensive compared to their petrol counterparts. Keeping in mind I'm coming from a PCP perspective, so low mileage and no fuel savings.

Don't look into the tables. Get out and take it for a spin... Then report back.

I did, I've driven both the eGolf and the GTE. I even had a nice German lady encouraging me to floor it :)

I enjoyed driving both of them and there's definitely perks to driving EV and PHEV, notably the quiet motor and in the GTE the traction light flashing in 3rd because of the torque.

As it stands, unfortunately, the savings aren't there on a 3 year PCP for me and they both need more power and a lower price. Not to mention the PHEV grant of €2,500 also ends this year.

Nice to see Peugeot back in the top 10. They are having a very good time now with the new 3008 especially- lovely looking car that is totally in tune with the market and what buyers want. The French and the Koreans have eaten up Opel sales and pushed them out of the top ten.

    I don't like crossovers
    I don't like French cars
    I don't like Peugeots

Yet for some reason I admire the 3008 every time I see one.

It is a stunning car do and very classy as well. A neighbour got one recently and another neighbour has a Sportage another has a Duster. I know which car I would have. The 3008 just looks so much better. It's in a different league it makes most other cars look old. There is another lovely car I sat in recently do and that is the Mitsubishi Eclipse. It also looks very modern and very classy inside too.

Anyone know how many cars Mitsubishi has sold this year so far? I think as soon as the diesel Eclipse comes in the will do a lot better.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

That's in it's appeal. It looks classy and premium and not really like an SUV crossover at all at the same time.
