    Hi,

Just wondering is it possible to bypass having to sign up for Social Housing and go straight to applying for the HAP scheme?

We have no interest in applying for social housing, we just want to see if we are entitled to any proportion of rent being deducted, both are earning just over minimum wage in full-time jobs.

    Thanks.

    Not particularly.

But the chances are that you won't be offered social housing - the council would rather you were on HAP. You can increase these chances by saying you want to live in area(s) where there is most demand for social housing.

Apply anyways ... it cannot hurt to ask.

You might as well go on the housing list. It's about 10 years long in most areas but in any case if you get HAP you are considered housed and might be taken off the list anyway.

Social housing and HAP is for people who have a long-term housing need not as a means of a hand-out.

Its not meant for people who do not have a interest in applying for social housing.

Huh? HAP is intended as a "hand out". I personally have absolutely no problem with my taxes going to help a couple, both working in minimum wage jobs, to house themselves.

I have a much bigger problem with the welfare lifers who have never worked and never intend working, despite being able to.

In what way would you see a couple on minimum wage not having a long-term housing need?

Does €3k take home a month really necessitate assisted housing in particular long term?

    http://irishlinks.co.uk/take-home-net-pay-ireland.htm

Over €3k take home a month based on 39 hours for couple on min wage.

Vs circa €1400 per month for unemployed couple.

Surely long-term housing need is more appropriate for the latter no?
