Some films need to be seen on the big screen

Popcorn and PicknMix a must for me at cinema

It used to be a case that there would always be a bin at the door from the cinema to the lobby. But anytime I've been lately, this is gone.
There are other bins around the lobby though that can be used.

Blanch, Liffey Valley and Point Village all have bins on the way out. I know this because I use them every time I'm there but I still see people getting up out of rubbish pits anyway. It's just sheer laziness and inconsideration I think. Cleaning staff are employed but they're there to sort spillages and vaccuum the place, not pick up after every patron.

If it bothers you don't go to the cinema.

Yeah, hang on I’ll just get one of my servants to go purchase one for me

Oh yeah, people leave some mess behind them alright. I've my kids well trained to clean up after themselves at the cinema though :)

I don't mind the munching and rustling, the volume is loud enough as it is to drown it out.

Yes, last time I was at the cinema in Tallaght I couldn't believe the state of the place as we were leaving. People had left crisp bags and pop corn containers thrown all over the place, including on the steps.

I don't think I've ever been in a cinema in Ireland that doesn't have bins in the screens?

I've never seen them in Dublin. Odeon & Vue don't have them. I can't comment on other cinemas as I don't go to other cinemas

Except they do. Blanch and Point Village are Odeon and they have them.

Vue in Liffey Valley has an abundance of them

Two large popcorns. One for the trailers, one for the movie.

This always baffles me, the cinema is not that expensive as an experience overall.

Assuming both people pay full price for a ticket, and get a large popcorn/drink each, the total cost here is about €36 for two people.

That's €36 for two hours of (hopefully) solid entertainment, decent snacks, and an all around good evening out for two people.

I can't see how that's bad value for most couples who go to the cinema once every two weeks or so.

So, 9 or so euro a head for 2 tickets, 18 euro, and you think that another 18 euro for the kind of snacks you get in a cinema is good value???
18 euro for popcorn and coke!? I like to treat myself every now and again but Id prefer go to see another film then fork that out, not because I couldnt afford it (maybe once a week, but it would become rapidly unaffordable soon enough, and many people cant), but because it is a rip off. I realise cinemas make money on the snacks, maybe more so than the tickets, but is by no estimation good value.

Not in the cinema. My point was that in the states they have bins in the cinema itself. You bin your rubbish just before you go through the doors leaving the cinema / screen. By the time you hit the lobby you no longer have rubbish. I've never seen that in Ireland

They also do free popcorn refills in the states. We need that here

Yeah, you can turn a night out at the cinema into a very expensive one if you like. I don't think it's worth the money if you're going to be adding overpriced nachos and popcorn and fizzy drinks onto the price. But just going to see the film itself is a cheap enough night out and a chance to meet up with a friend or get out midweek without feeling wrecked the next day.

I always eat something at the cinema. Usually popcorn or chocolate, nothing that would make any real noise/smell though.

What would people be eating that 'stinks to high heaven', realistically? Hot Dog is gone in two minutes, and nachos are hardly that strongly scented.
The first time I walked in the door of the Whitewater Shopping Centre in Newbridge after the cinema opened there, all I could sense was the foul stench of popcorn. The cinema was at the very far end of the shopping centre, around a corner, and on a different floor.

I despise the smell of popcorn!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 774 ✭✭✭daveyeh

I never get bothered by other people annoying me or even sitting nearby when I go to the cinema.

I just bring a few beers, some crisps, & an empty 2 litre bottle to piss in.

Perhaps the two things are connected.

Id rather get food elsewhere, popcorn is like a part of the cinema experience and of course you need something to wash that down as they make the stuff so salty. The thing is, cinemas make that stuff in volume (so it should be really cheap) and then still reheat leftover popcorn the next day, I hate to even think of the hotdogs.

Im not so sure of it being a great way to socialise, maybe before or after, be nice if you could get a drink, just see that it would get abused/neglected by the cinema

Bins would be a good idea, Ive seen those types with rotating bin lids, but the rubbish either doesnt all go in, gets flipped out or you have to excessively handle the bin to get the rubbish in,

I can guess they dont have free refills

Yes in the cinema. Both Odeons 100% had bins in the cinema last time I was there, that's very recently. Liffey Valley I haven't been to in about 8 months so that could have changed. Anyway, literally talking about rubbish here. Take your sh*t out of your seat next time people and don't be a pig, whether the bin is in the cinema or literally outside the screen door.

I always find it curious how people blame the "state" (by state I mean business, culture, education etc..) for their own reprehensible behaviour.

It's the culture and upbringing of the person that is at fault here.

Not necessarily true. I've never seen free popcorn refills and have often seen rubbish left behind here.

I dont care if you bring in a roasted pig into the cinema as long as you shut up and keep off the phone.

I said good value as an overall experience - which I still believe it is. To me the material cost of the popcorn is irrelevant. €18 a head for two hours of cinematic entertainment with snacks. I don't particularly care what it cost the cinema, only that I've had a good time.

By that logical approach based on what it costs the cinema versus what you pay, most things one can do, anywhere, involving food/beverages are bad value.

Why would you pay €5.50 for a Vodka/Tonic when you can make it for €1 at home. Why would you pay €3 for a coffee when you can make it for 50c at home.

It's endless really, but we almost never think that way....except when it comes to snacks at the cinema. You wouldn't even get two pints in a bar for the cost of a large coke and popcorn.

I just move if I am anywhere near a loud eater or chatty people as does anyone I am with. Unless its a big blockbuster in its first week, easy enough to find some place in the cinema where you can ignore the "trouble makers"

Can't tolerate noisy eating or slurping.

I once sat beside two guys who sat through all the ads and trailers and waited until the film started before they pulled their KFC bags from beneath their seats and started horsing into it. It had to be at least 30 minutes since they bought it. I guess they really wanted to dine and watch the film at the same time.

I also went with a friend once who brought all his own snacks, nothing weird there, until I hear him biting into an apple. Seemed so out of place

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Subway sandwich. Rape scene. I don't usually do this or eat a whole lot but I just had it and decided to plough into it. I was pretty discreet so I don't think anyone got offended. No marinara messiness. Clean Turkey and Ham. Nothing crazy.

I'm not really a fan of popcorn(I don't hate it either) But i never buy when going to the cinema. I've went a few times just to see the movie without eating/drinking anything but mostly i just buy a packet of Malteasers and yes i eat with my mouth closed. :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,165 ✭✭✭Captain Obvious

Why can some people not sit through a two hour film without bringing in a truck load of food - half of it stinking to high heaven, and all of it involving crunching and munching and slurping?
No problem with someone quietly eating a bit of popcorn or some chocolate but the guy beside me last night was like a pig with his snout in a trough.

Personally, a trip to the cinema for me is a welcome and rare break for me and my spouse and we like to enjoy it with a bit of comfort food.

Cost of cinema isn't too bad unless you bring kids who are too big for the kids menu. Last time I went it was €70 for 2 adults and 2 kids. It's a tough pill to swallow but it is one of the things we can still do as a family.

We eat ourselves silly while we are their. Don't think it's a problem and is the main reason we pay to go, my missus sometimes gets me to drop in and get popcorn and nachos on the way home from work, from the cinema she likes them that much. If they didn't sell stuff like that specifically for people to bring in then fair enough bit it is part and parcel of the experience.
Odeon coolock sell beer but I wouldn't get it because of the need to pee.

Never even though to clean up in the cinema I must say. I though it was standard practise for then to clean up after. I don't feel too bad it creates jobs I guess. I'd always clean my table in Mcdonalds or somewhere like that but not in a proper restaurant because it's not standard practise which is what I always though about the cinema. If they had a big problem they would stick it in the ads to clear your mess and then I would no problem.

To be honest I can't understand why people don't bring their rubbish with them after watching a movie. I go to my local cinema a lot and they leave bins outside each cinema door so that people can put their rubbish in them after the movie. There is usually two guys on duty one manning the till and the other picks up the rubbish in all four cinemas and this sometimes delays the screening of the movie by at least ten to fifteen minutes as most people just by pass the bins comming out. I know it's not mandatory to pick up your rubbish but the guy in my cinema always seems to be under pressure to have the four cinemas tidy for the next crowd of cinema goers.

People eating at the cinema during a film never bothered me much really,, part of the reason why cinemas sell food popcorn & soda drinks is to get in extra revenue besides selling film tickets, what does P*** me off at the cinema is when some people sitting near to you take out their smart phones during a film to start texting or when people don,t put on their phones on silent & a phone rings out - when people talk during a film is very annoying - ( Predators ) when I seen it at the cinema in 2010 there was a group of travellers that kept talking & talking loudly during the film I & some others went out to say it to the cinema staff, when they came in & checked & saw that it was a group of travellers were the ones talking loud during the film the staff didn,t wanna do anything .

It's something a lot of people just don't ever think about, in Cineworld or vue in Dublin I've never noticed large bins that would be convenient for taking my rubbish with me. Cinema food is overratted and overpriced and in future i will take any rubbish out with me

I enjoy eating something nice in the cinema and having a drink or two maybe some nuts or crisps as well but I always try and be prepared before the film starts and to be as quiet as I can while eating it.I think it is important to have respect for the people around you too and not be ignorant or rude. I feel like I am missing something if I do not have something to eat and drink in the cinema. I also bring my rubbish with me or leave it neatly for the cleaners to pick up.

One of the reasons I've mainly gone to off peak showings. Went to see the Churchill film on a Tuesday evening recently and it was bliss. The only people who go to midweek evening showings are people who actually want to see the film, and most of them had bought no food. I certainly have no recollection of scoffing and slurping going on.

This whole cinema experience business gets on my tits. That phrase should only apply to the act of seeing a film on a huge screen in the dark. This popcorn and coke gorging is just another American thing that's traveled well.

I remember going to the cinema when I was about 16 with two friends from school (about 20 years ago now) and for the whole film a guy a few rows behind us spent the entire time rustling tayto bags and opening individually wrapped sweets.
We turned around at the end of the film and got a cheery 'Ah hello girls!'.
    It was our Irish teacher!

I know one of the guys very well and he doesn't want to offend anyone by asking them to put their rubbish in the bins provided so he just leaves the bins outside the doors where people can see them going in and puts them inside about ten minutes before the movie finishes. There are a few people that will do it but these are people that go to the cinema on a weekly basis and know him well. I often see them after a late showing rushing to clean up all four cinemas to try and get home to their Familes so I would stay back and help especially on a busy weekend. I know that's my choice but I'm sure there are plenty of people who work in cinemas bigger than our one accross the country find the same thing happening because they are so understaffed.

OK that's sounds like a very small cinema but anyone I've ever been too has never put an emphasis on cleaning up. It's not that I'm a slob or disrespectful or anything like that. I have genuinely thought about the lack of bins at a cinema and though it's just the way it is in the cinema. Them come around and clean up after your gone, don't worry about it. We got this. Enjoy your day sir!
Next time I'm their I will be more conscious of it and see do they have bins outside with smiling faces waiting for your deposits but I honestly think it's geared towards, get the hell out as quick as possible and we will clean up the mess before the next showing. In Dublin anyway.
