It’s driving me crazy, I’ve searched and used all the keyword combinations I could thing of.

It was a story I read as a teenager - a hunter in the wild is tracked by a leathery spheroid which never lets up.

He witnesses it gutting a bear that’s attacked it. Blades appear out of the sphere and in one move dispatch the animal.

It follows him for days at the same relentless pace ....

I’ll stop there in case someone wants to read it after someone manages to identify the book and writer for me.
