Last night I turned off my laptop choosing the "Update and Shutdown" option.

This morning I turned it on and it started updating again.

It is now stuck on 33% and has been for over an hour.

The message is: "Working on updates 33% Don't turn off your PC. This will take time."

The fan is blowing hard and there has been no activity on the HD light.

    Finally, Ctrl/Alt/Delete has no effect.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    D.

Ps. This has never happened before. Laptop has never given any problems.

This can happen give it half an hour failing this i have on some computers pressed power button until it turns off then power back on and the update finished but it could corrupt your install and you could loose data so its up to you. I have done it 4 or 5 times but i work in IT so know how to fix if it went wrong. Give it as long as you can but at your own risk use the hard shutdown as i discribe and good luck

Did a forced reboot and ran the Update Troubleshooter.

    It fixed a few things.

    I'm now re-running the update.

It's VERY slow, but it is running.

    Thanks.

After about one hour's updating, it got stuck again at exactly the same 33% point.

Wonder if it could be my Avira anti-virus software? It posted two warnings about blocking something during the update.

    Annoying.

    Sorted.

    1. I ran the Windows Update Repair tool.

    2. I deleted all the files in C:Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download

I then ran the Fall Creator's update again and it installed fully.

    run from command prompt

    sfc /scannow

    chkddsk /f /r

    Saw that somewhere too.

But, emptying that folder of everything is simpler, I think.

    Thanks.
