Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. What Cash_q said about preparing yourself is good advice. One thing I wished I had known about before I started was cluster feeding, and in particular Night Two. My baby wanted to be on the boob for literally 10 hours straight. I thought there was something wrong, and sat up all night worrying and crying. I had nobody in my family or group of friends who had breastfed, and everyone was telling me it wasn't normal and there's something wrong with him. Then, when the midwife arrived the next morning and I said, "Ah, night two! Sure they all do that!", I burst into floods of tears!

It's also important to be aware that in 95%+ of cases, where there's a breastfeeding problem, there's also a breastfeeding solution. Too often, women are told that they should just give up, despite not wanting to, because their supply is low or they have mastitis or baby's latch isn't good... when in reality, if they were just given the right help, it could have been sorted. It is only in a small percentage of cases where breastfeeding just is not possible. But we live in a society where even GPs and public health nurse often don't have much experience of breastfeeding, and don't know the solutions to the problems.

Plenty of online support too. There's a good breastfeeding support thread on boards.

Yes thank god I have had lots of friends who have breastfed as well as my mam, I am sure they will be invaluable. I really don't know with my SIL she persisted through all of it, paid hundreds to lactation consultants etc. but in hindsight reckons she may not have been eating enough for a good milk supply. Plus baby was tongue-tied and ended having to get it zapped.

That said, a few of my friends flew through it, so that could happen too! Fingers crossed!

Anyone else getting very very excited to meet the baba? Had my 28 week check with consultant on Thursday and the scan photo was unbelievably clear of the baby's face, who looked like they had a giant grin - I was bawling! Can really imagine the little monkey in my arms now.

It still doesn't really feel real to me! Although I am starting to get very fed up of being pregnant and would really like my body back... still have 12 weeks to go (maybe even 14), so I can't imagine how fed up I'll be by then!

How's everyone doing on the exhaustion front? I honestly am floored by it. I've never been this tired for this long in my life. Every day is a huge effort and I'm really struggling with it.

Gonna get a 3d scan in next few weeks. They're pricey but it was the highlight of our last pregnancy so I think it's worth it! Will hopefully give me a wee lift too.

God, breastfeeding, such a debatable topic and your made feel uncomfortable no matter what you do! So frustrating. I hated it all to be honest but stuck at it for four months out of pure guilt. And I will try it again this time, again, just because of the guilt, it's awful really, so much pressure and even at four months when I took out a bottle in public I felt like a devil mother who didn't care for her child at all.

I'm saying all that, and I know I will struggle to take my own advice, but no one should feel that pressure or guilt and I know if I had just gone to bottles I would have reduced my stress levels big time and the journey would have been much much easier. I have friends though and they took to it so easily, no bother at all.

Message at the end of the day though is give it a go, put up with some stress and discomfort (you can't expect it to be easy from the beginning, it takes practice like everything else) get help like from a lactation consultant but if you have tried your best and it's not working out, just go to bottles and try and not feel the terrible guilt imposed by others and then by yourself. That is all if you want to try breastfeeding at all. If you are up for bottles from the outset, that's all good too. Happy mummy means happy baby

In terms of discomfort, well I was sailing through this pregnancy compared to last one up till now. I am uncomfortable, body feels achy and the bump is awkward and I need to lie down lots, even sitting at a desk in work was horrific. And the exhaustion, oh my god, I could sleep the whole day round if I didn't get so uncomfortable and achy! I think the discomfort I should have had over 40 weeks is now all being condensed into these last ten weeks.
I am 30 weeks now and doctor has officially signed me off work after giving out to me saying my baby is a million times more important than work, she is right but it still feels strange to be finished up work way before I should be. Ah well!

I’ll definitely be giving BF a go. I can understand people being weirded out by it (i’m finding the leaky nipples now quite strange). One of my SiL was bullied out of it by her family telling her she was like a ‘milk cow’ and it was ‘disgusting’, which is as wrong as trying to shame someone into it.

I’m planning to hand-express before the birth because GD mother’s can have problems with supply and if baba needs it there’ll be some colostrum stored.

I am also floored by it. Slept from 11pm-6.30am and fell back asleep at 7.30am-11.45am....then got up and made it as far as the couch where I am currently flaked out. I have an underactive thyroid since before pregnancy and my levels are off so that's not helping. I am so so lucky to be off work for another 5 weeks so I am just resting as much as I can. It's really frustrating, especially at the weekends when I'd like to be able to go off for the day with my husband but I just get tired too quickly to bother.

I don't have GD but my yoga teacher was saying to one of the other girls about saving her leaks...can we freeze it? I haven't started leaking yet but if I can safely store it then I'd like to try.. I have a Tommee Tippee breast and bottle feeding kit that I haven't opened but there are pouches in there...I suppose o should have a look at what's in it!

P.s. can't believe your sister-in-law's family could be so nasty, comparing her to a cow...one of my students who has special needs made this logical comparison when we were covering RSE in school, yes, a mammal feeding her young! A natural thing which shouldn't be used as an insult :(

AFAIK you can freeze it. Another SiL did that and was able to donate some too, but talk to the nurse/midwife/lactation specialist about it.

It was so awfulnthe way my SiL’s family made her feel. My own would be much more ‘breast is best, but fed is the most important thing’. Was at a family do this weekend with 2 women breast feeding and no-one batted an eye.

Personally I don’t see the point of the bother of sterilising and the expense of buying equipment and formula if i’m going to be making it for free with no special apparatus needed. But I do respect that not every woman can or wants to: I’m still a bit freaked out that I’ve started producing, it seems so alien.

Is that something the hospital told you to try? I met a girl who expressed before birth to try and encourage milk production and I wished I had asked her more about it at the time. I think I had a low supply last time and wondered about maybe pumping in advance to maybe start to get a supply going and try and keep up with the baby this time but in the very very little research I have done so far I read that it can induce Labour a bit so was scared off from reading more!

What have you been told/read about it so far kylith. Will you freeze what you get and at what stage do you start? I don't have any leaky boobs so wonder would it be like trying to extract nothing?

Yeah, they advised doing it in the diabetic clinic. She addressed it bringing in labour, and said that it doesn’t, but it can make it easier to get going as they don’t like leaving women with GD to go over.

I’ll be booking in for a lactation class soon so will be going over it then, but at the moment it’s really just a dribble, so probably not worth doing much, but. TMI Warning! I do do a little every day, just to try get-keep it going.

Did you get a letter or instructions for the GD test in the coombe? Mine is Wednesday and I assume I have to fast but I got no information this time.

    Big hugs, miscarriage is horrible

Thanks so much, I really didnt realise how many women go through it until it happened to me :(

I literally called the hospital on my lunch today as they only wrote the app in my pink card with no instructions, the perinatal centre told me today its fasting from midnight with no water or no medication. They open at 7.45 and its 1st come 1st served. When you arrive you get a number and join the queue so the appointment times are kinda irrelevant. She told me the earlier I arrive the better even though I was giving 8.10am app. The whole thing takes 2 hours. I have to see the consultant in the middle of all that so it's going to be a busy morning tomorrow for me

There is a distinct probability I'm going to throw up the drink without heartburn medication.... All I can do is my best I guess! Thanks for the heads up, that saves me a call tomorrow. I did it last time bu its been four years so I've forgotten except for the heartburn-it was horrendous. I was never so glad for the last blood draw

Yeah God I am the same I am only taking Rennie but I am taking about 6 a day sometimes more so I think I will ask tomorrow can I have a prescription for something stronger.

Has anyone started their maternity benefit forms? We have to get that social services card first which is a joke so I have my app booked in the social welfare to get the card 1st then start all the forms

Definitely ask for something stronger. I'm on ranitidine twice a day and still need a couple of rennie so I'll be asking for lanzoprazole but trying to hold out right now.

Yeah I'm still chucking up about once a week and its usually exacerbated with an empty stomach and heartburn.... Great craic!!

I've a lot of it filled in. Then found out that our employer wants the whole form (section 1 is my own details and section 3 doesn't apply) so I'm considering being an obnoxious pregnant woman and sending them a blank section 1 and a section 3 with a big N/A scrawled through it. I don't see why they need to have my household details to fill in their bit tbh

I’ve my meeting to get that card on Friday! I thought it was a lil odd to still have to call in to the office even though I’m hoping to apply for maternity online. Is it a big form?

Ah right thanks, what a nuisance! I'll be hard pressed to get it in on time, working up to the 5th of October so need the form in by 24th August...I'll have to post it to the principal in the hope that she'll be back a week earlier than the rest of us..

Jeepers I need to do this too! Thankfully I have a card (joy of being a sub in this country in recent years - needed the card for dole during summer). So I must fill out the form and get my new principal to do the same! If we apply online can boss just log in online and fill out their part I wonder! I may look at it tomorrow!

Buying out buggy tomorrow! Have decided to go with the 3 wheeled Infababy Ultimo!

    Hi All

Glad to hear everyone is doin well.. I also had my GD test last week and was delighted that I dont have it, had it in my head that I would. Im also finished up work now, completely exhausted and my body is aching, we do need to mind ourselves now in these final weeks. Does anyone else find the weeks are flying by? Was sorting out stuff from my first baby tonight and I came across the sheets we used from the next2me.. they were recommended to me in the shop that we bought the next2me in, much cheaper and fit perfect. They are the DK Glove sheet for anyone who's looking.

I had the card already, but once you get the card you have to go online and request an activation code. Mine never came after several weeks so I had to request it again, just a heads up that this will delay things. When you can finally access the online services, it tells you that your employer must have completed their parts of the form before you can proceed. They will not be able to log in and do their part online, you need to physically download the form and have them complete it. I don't know if we then have to upload a copy or what as I didn't get that far

Yeah and for applying for mat leave! You have to have the card before you apply!

  • Registered Users Posts: 13 NeeNeeAW

Girls, I’m sure this has been discussed but I can’t find it! What bottles are you all using? My sister in law suggested Nuk or Dr Brown but I know with Dr Brown they are apparently a nightmare to clean!!

    Any suggestions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 927 ✭✭✭greenttc

Mam are good for self sterilising in the microwave but I used them for a year and got so sick of them in the end, 5 parts to each bottle is lots of cleaning too. They are good if you travel lots or visit different houses cause you can sterilise anywhere with just the microwave.

I have recently bought avent bottles and really like them!

Sometimes you just have to see what the baby likes!

I found the whole process incredibly easy. I made an appointment for the Monday. Got a confirmation on Tuesday and applied for Mat benefits and got confirmation I'd be approved online on Wednesday.

Got my card the following week.

Applying for the card is very easy, they're possibly the most helpful government office I've ever been in.

But how did you apply for your maternity benefits so quickly? When you say 'got a confirmation' on Tuesday - was this the online activation code? I waited literally weeks for mine. And did you already have the maternity benefit forms completed and to hand when you went to apply online? I don't and it said not to proceed without them, and as I'm off work until the end of August I can't get the forms completed until then.

I got a text saying "You have recently been registered for PSC. Some public services online require to you have a a mygovid account" and gave a link. I used that link to sign in and then clicked on benefits.

It was an online form (The Mat1 i think) and it only asked a handful of questions. Then I needed to upload a stamped copy of the MB2 from my employer and that was it.

So i didn't have to fill anything out myself on paper. Only work did.

Ok thanks maybe because it has been over a year since I got the card I had the extra step to do to activate the online service. I just wish I had counted the weeks back before leaving school as my principal is away so I can't get it in any earlier than the end of August

As for the sheets - Galway is a trek too far lol, I'll go to Mothercare today and get the flat sheets

Apparently, there's a backlog so you might want to start it ASAP unless your employer is paying you as normal.

Yeah this is what I'm worried about...my principal is in another country so little I can do about it. I suppose even if the payment is delayed it'll be backdated anyway so I should be fine fingers crossed

All good today at my GD test I never heard so I presume I am in the clear.. I had the tests 8.30 9.30 and 10.30 and they give you a voucher for free tea and toast afterwards in the Coombe.. Very efficient, I have to say I am really impressed with the Coombe no complaints at all! I saw the consultant then and one measurement of the baby was 30 weeks 2 days! I am only 28 tomorrow so a little worried she is measuring 2 weeks ahead, has anyone any experience with this? I am back in 4 weeks again to see how things are going.. Feeling more real now girls!!

Nice one Orange369. I'm in tomorrow, dreading it. Currently staying up past my bedtime so that I can eat and take ranitidine at like 1155 and praying that I keep the drink down lol.

I measured behind on my first except for one scan at 37 weeks which was WAAAY off with over 7lbs weight (he was born three weeks later at 6lbs4). I'm fairly confident the margin of error increases as you go on, thats why dating is done at 12 weeks

The drink was honestly not too bad! It's quiet big, 300mls in a pouch like a capri sun (tastes kinda similar to that too).. It was freezing cold so I almost enjoyed it as I was so thirsty, felt it was easier to drink as it was so cold. I did get heartburn after it though and also got a prescription for heartburn off the consultant.

I did get heartburn after it though and also got a prescription for heartburn off the consultant.

Yeah last time it was lucozade, I've heard this might be a bit easier. By the 1hr mark I was swallowing acid and trying not to move in case I threw up. Not looking forward to that feeling lol. RH- shot as well as consultant appointment too. It'll be a busy morning!

Oh god help you! I got two small plastic glasses of what looked like and tasted like flat 7up totally easy to drink!
No Lucozade anymore, not enough sugar in it anymore!
    What’s the RH shot?

That was really good going, hopefully I'll be out that fast. I'm heading in early for the GD appointment

Yeah I heard that alright. I have a negative blood type so I get the anti D shot at 28 weeks in case I reject further pregnancies. I actually had it already at just over 12 weeks due to ongoing spotting. Its not the worst, just another needle!

Hope GD goes well! Feeling thankful to be avoiding it again this time. I am also in for the Rh- today. Had whooping cough vaccine and bloods taken on Friday, so feeling like a bit of a pin cushion these days! Dunno how anyone gets through a pregnancy when they're terrified of needles.

No phonecall, no GD! Yippee! I don’t know why, I had myself convinced I’d get it this time. So many needles today, God help those phobic of them.

On the plus side, BP perfect, no GD, anti D done and growth scan/clinic booked for 32 weeks. Very productive day

Ha I was convinced I would have it this time too, it feels like pure luck cause my diet is so bad this time and exercise is no existent due to pure lack of energy. Very very very relieved not to have it

Ah thats great news! I am the same back in 4 weeks time. I start the weekly antenatal classes tomorrow now every Thursday for the next 5 weeks, did anyone find these useful? I hope we get some tips as we are both clueless lol. How important any good monitors? Any recommendations? A few people mentioned BT6000 but as I said I wouldn't have a clue where to even start

I thought the antenatal classes were good, especially bringing my husband etc!
We got the angel care monitor for our first but never ended up using the mat which is why I chose it in the first place, just was too fiddly and too likely to give false alarms. I have kind concluded that anything that allows you to hear your child is sufficient, no need for any fancy functions. Admittedly I do think I would like to see the wee man from time to time (now that he is standing and walking and climbing) without going into his room but I also wonder would it really have been a good thing to have in the first year, you wouldn't be able to "see" the breathing or anything so would still have to go into the room and I think a monitor would have made me more paranoid and would have made me watch the monitor all night cause I could.

So, probably not what you were looking for as no real recommendations but I would say expensive and fancy is not always the best for everyone

How many sheets/blankets are people getting. Im planning on having baby napping during day in moses basket and chicco next2me at night. How often should you be changing sheets/blankets.

We have a security camera in his room which we can view through our phones and when he was a baby we used that with a cheap aldi audio monitor (one of our best buys, the amount of falls that monitor had lol!). Will likely do the same this time. I thought the video quality on the dedicated baby monitors was awful compared to a proper camera. We avoided the angel mat because my anxiety would be through the roof.

I’m unsure what to do this time as I have single side hearing loss and if I lie on my good ear I literally do not hear our little boy. So I might have to go for one of the video monitors that lights up when audio triggers it. We’ll see.

Do we go to GP at 30 weeks? He didn’t tell me to today. Though it was my fastest clinic visit ever, in and out in like 5 minutes! I think my ranitidine script might run out before 32 weeks

My diet varies between being good, being awful and not wanting to eat at all which is so not good!
