Poor lady beside me is desperately trying to breastfeed but the baby has been screaming in hunger for the full 48hrs I’ve been here. I’m shattered just listening to it, I can’t imagine what she’s feeling like. It’s like torture. Cannot wait to get released at 48hrs and home to our own house. Six bed wards are honestly nuts when baby’s are with mums all the time. They just set each other off and no one is getting any sleep

Oh god Mirrorwall, I definitely don't miss that..

Luckier here. Had a 4 bed ward all to myself last nite until early this morning. Little man is fairly settled in fairness. He’s feeding great but my boobs are seriously tender now that milk is starting to come in. Especially the latch. Wowsa. But that will go in time.

I can empathise, I thought the pain of latching on was literally toe curling, as in I actually watched my toes curl during it, very easy to see where the phrase came from! Lucky you with a ward all to yourself!!! Are you public?

Toe curling is right. I just need to pull this awful face and take a few breaths. Husband looked horrified yesterday when he saw the grimace. Yes, I’m public. Someone else has come in but their baby is in special care. Just seems to be a quiet wknd. Luck of the draw I guess.

Which hospital are you in? You definitely got lucky on the ward! Will you get home soon?

BFing in the early days is so tough. I found it extremely painful for the first few weeks. Have you had the latch checked by a LC? I hear lots of advice that it shouldn't be sore if the latch is correct. That wasn't my experience, although it did take us a while to get a good latch going.

Multi mam compresses (stored in the fridge and cut in half), lasinoh cream, and breast angels are your arsenal for now.

It's a labour of love but totally worth it!

Fair play to ye all with the breastfeeding, not easy looking

Still here as need to see the registrar as is fontenelle is a little raised. I’ve been discharged in the meantime. Passed the jaundice test with flying colours but failed the hearing test in one ear so have to come back in two weeks to try again. It’s very likely to be fluids apparently

Yes the 6 beds is madness, I was in for 4 nights post delivery and got almost zero rest. Between being woken for meds and checks, other people using their phones with full sound effects, taking phone calls late at night and just full on ignoring visiting rules/quiet time, it was hell. Being at home is like sleeping on a cloud, but I'm still grateful of all the help I got with feeding in hospital because I was pretty clueless.

And the Facebook messenger sound effects ffs!! Put the damn phone on silent! One girl kept blowing smoochy kissy noises down the phone to anyone she was hanging up on, her baby daughter, husband, parents.. jeezussss lol!

This is something that's really annoyed me. I was gifted some books and one said that BF shouldn't hurt and the other said that labour wouldn't hurt unless the mother was afraid/tense. It irritates me no end that there are women out there who are stressing over labour and BF being painful and difficult and thinking that it's their fault. Of course labour is going to be painful. Of course BF can be difficult. It's not anyone's fault!

I was hoping to get out under early release scheme but then diagnosed with Strep B meant I'd have 48 hour monitoring post delivery, then baby came early/is small/lost over 10% weight so was kept in the 4 nights. You can't bank on getting out early, although I hope for your sake you do! Bring proper ear/noise defenders just in case, the earplugs don't cut it!

Yeah group B was the long hold for us too as I didn’t have a full dose antibiotics on board again this time. I have never been so glad to have bad hearing in one ear. I slept on the good ear and kept my hand on his cot so I could feel it vibrate lol

I got away with just one night with my first babies so I have everything crossed that that's as long as I have to stay this time too but sure, you can't plan anything to do with this process eh??

Dreading the ol six bed ward if I do have to stay in, ugh!

I had a one bed room this time but the last time I was in a 6 bed. There is still loads of noise you can't escape it. Hospitals are just not places for resting and getting good sleep. Home now and the guilt kicks in that this that and the other needs doing. I wish it was easy to just switch off and relax.

Oh I was told it was pressure i was feeling and no it was pain I'm adamant. Just give me the sympathy I need instead of trying to make me feel like I'm losing my mind!

There’s definitely a big adjustment at the beginning. I expressed and bfed my last boy too. He came early so I had to express for 3 weeks. I remember the nipple pain then too. They toughen up after a week or two.
Just finished a feed here now and he’s panned out in my arms and I should put him back in the crib so I can catch up on sleep but he’s just so content it’s hard to let him go.

I meant the labour sorry. I am bottle feeding but my milk came in yesterday and my boobs are massive and very sore and always take so long to dry out. Awe it's so hard to put them back in to sleep. Really loving this little boy.

I can't remember who it was, but I have heard someone say that labour is pressure in the same way that a hurricane is a brisk wind.

Omg that's impressive! I can't imagine how awful that car journey must have been! Congratulations and hope you and him are doing well.

It's only the 8th and we must have had two thirds of babies arrive already!

I second cash's question about how long you laboured at home beforehand? Defo interested to hear your story! And also second caitrionas comment that the car journey must have been tough!!!

More boys! How many of each have we got now? Making me wonder even more which gender is currently kicking away with me!

Yes can't believe we have so many babies already, and here was me wondering would I be the first with the earliest due date in October, how wrong I was!!

    BS:

4 hours of what I thought were pretend contractions. Been getting BH for a few days and lost plug on Saturday and Sunday in 2 chunks.

2 hours of 'this might be getting a bit more serious'
Woke up husband then called hospital.
1 hour to drop off daughter and dogs at grandparents. 15 mins to get from there to hospital.

10 mins in delivery room... uh oh. There's lots of 'pressure'. First check for progress: 10cm dilated plus baby descending.

Baby arrived. Lots of other stuff happened. It's all fine now.

Trying to establish breastfeeding on 30 mins doze in 30 hours is quite the challenge, but we'll keep at it.

Well done entropy!Hpw the feck did you manage the hour to drop off daughter and dogs??The car journeys in nearly finish me!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,751 ✭✭✭mirrorwall14

Wow entropy fair play to you!!

First rough night last night, he just wasn’t for settling but eventually went down properly about 5am and got a bit of sleep then. Not helped by my milk coming in so waiting for it to dry up now. Also realised that this definitely didn’t happen last time around so this is a new phenomenal for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 927 ✭✭✭greenttc

Wow entropy, that was some going! As shesty said, fair play being able to manage the hour long drop off, we're you not in agony? That's the bit I am dreading out if all of it, the car journey! At the same time, nice that it all happened within 10 mins when you arrived!

I am sure you are wrecked!!!

Christ! I'd said your toddler didn't know what to make of it!

On my last baby, I just had to be on all fours for the strong contractions. I couldn't sit in a car. I am now having premonitions of me with the seat put back on my hands and knees facing backwards.... imagine the looks at traffic lights!!

How are you feeling, greenttc? Are you still totally Zen to be overdue, or are you turning into an angry bear now?

I am honestly just fine with the waiting, I feel like I am different to everyone I know and most in here when it comes to wanting the baby out, I am happy enough just waiting! I was the same the last time too, I think maybe it is my mind protecting me from thinking about the while Labour and delivery, it's like I am in denial that the pain is going to happen!

I actually thought things were starting last night though, had serious pressure and pain, even started timing it to see and it was like five minutes apart and pain lasted around 60-90, seconds but i somehow knew/thought it couldn't be it and they eased off after about an hour and a half.... That kinda makes me wary cause I don't think I Could handle a car journey with the types of contractions I had the last time so am kinda worried about how long to wait, what if it had been real last night for example!?

That was the one and only benefit to the induction in my mind, I was already in the hospital so no car journeys needed!

How you holding up? Do you have Liam back with you? What date is your due date again?

  • Registered Users Posts: 255 ✭✭Orange369

Wow the fast labours sound intense!! I feel like I will defo be last to have my baby now, 39 weeks tomorrow.. Was at GP yesterday for usual checks and all good, head is down but not engaged so not feeling very hopeful.. Getting a lot more pains the last few days, strong braxon hicks and period type back pain too, also just bleached the kitchen sink so hoping any of this might be a sign lol!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭catrionanic

Yes it is so hard to know! Several midwives have said to me to just come straight in at the earliest suspicion because of the fast labour, even if it is a false start. I'm only in ranelagh so close to the hospital but I remember you saying you're a bit further away, plus you've to get the wee man minded... I would go straight in next time, if I was you! You're overdue now, so any contractions are likely to be the real deal at this stage.

I have Liam back today. Dying to kiss and cuddle him and see his wee face, but also apprehensive because he is SO active and I really am not!!! So I feel like I'm doing a bad job. He is at the front door every morning at 8am in his jammies, shoes in his hands, shouting, "LIAM GO OUTSIDE NOW" on repeat.... as I languish on the sofa groaning!

Baby quiet this morning. Midwife told me to come in and get checked out, but I'm not sure if I'm just doubting myself because I've been really busy and haven't been paying attention to movements, plus the placenta is anterior and he is quiet in the mornings anyway. What to do, what to do

Ah i totally understand the feeling of having your wee boy back, I miss mine when he is just gone a few hours!!! But yes I also get how your feeling about needing to lie on the couch while they are dying to get outside! You have a little outside garden area don't you? Maybe just let him loose out there, although he could get blown away today!!! Would you manage a walk to that lovely playground by the luas Bridge in ranelagh? At least it is enclosed, has benches for you to sit on and is super toddler friendly so wouldn't require much lifting etc?

Yeah I am a bit further out in dundrum/Churchtown direction but not too much of a journey, all depends on the time of day!!! You are probably right that I should just make a move of I feel something starting, consultant told me the same but at the same time I am glad I didn't last night, the thoughts of going in to lie in that unit 3 are horrific!

I suppose you should try all the usual tricks to see if baby will move, cold water, orange juice or coke, bit of jiggling... I find if I lie on my side it helps too. You will know yourself if you think there is something wrong and any doubts just head in!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭catrionanic

Ah we are in the ranelagh gardens every day, sometimes twice a day! It's his favourite place. So no doubt I will be there this afternoon, tomorrow and every day until I pop!

Baba wriggling a little now since I ate something and drank water so I think we are okay for now. Not having any scans at my antenatal appointments does make me a bit more nervous sometimes. How do I know if there's enough fluid around baby, etc!

How many of us in this group are still waiting now? There can't be too many left, with all the early arrivals!

That playground is defo the best one for toddlers i have been in,bet we have unknowingly bumped into each other at some stage although havent been in a good while now!

Glad to hear there are some movements now!

I'm still waiting too. I too worry during the day that there's not a load of movement, but baba is very active in the evenings so I'm not too worried about it.
