Thinning

Due a haircut shortly usually just get it thinned out for the last 6 months to keep lenght (starting hair loss) have about 3 weeks done of not shaving would ye reccomend asking for it to be thinned out too just to tidy it and not knock it back growth wise? Maybe thinning would thicken it someway?
