I know I haven't been around much, particularly to throw in the annoying little challenges etc..
So Lent: Its a defined period of time 14 Feb to 31 March inclusive, so that's 46 days, or 45 if we agreed to leave Paddies Day out!

    1. Easy, what are you giving up. The usual's? How long will you last? Another table? Some withdrawal symptoms here after the chocolate pancakes..
    2. How about taking something up. Something new, that's a challenge to keep going but .damn.it.you.will... Like 10 deep breaths every morning or a plank every morning.. or Pgibbo setting up a log for 45 days :-)
    3. How about pledging as a forum/group to achieve something in the 45-46 days. Like 100,000m vertical or swim 1,000km (No idea how many regular poster we have etc..). Obviously we would need another table LOL and Kurt G to be on alert to do 10 straight hours in his fastlane endless pool to bring the team tally up or Joey or Zico ready to do 10 laps of the Sally Gap...

    Just some thoughts...
Oh and obviously making it interesting with some painful get out clauses..
Breaking an individual pledge - 100 burpees and a written account of your best excuse for failing or to that effect
Breaking the Team/Group pledge - 200 burpees for the whole class and blaming and fighting and Mod bans for everyone

sounds good, i'll have to give this serious thought, the obvious would be to give up drink but that would be just stupid:D i need something to celebrate getting a training session done!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,038 ✭✭✭Neady83

Great idea M, I've missed your challenges. It's a good time of year for these kind of challenges as most people are into a routine and training for a specific race - this will definitely help me clean up some loose ends.

Could we do the 100,000m vertical? I can contribute on foot - my biking is stationary these days so there's no real climbing going on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 737 ✭✭✭thejaguar

Never got involved in one of these before but..... a plank a day - now there's an idea.

I'm guessing it's for more than 30 seconds? That's about all I've got at the moment sadly.

The most elevation gain from any of my cycles recently has been the little step into the shed to get onto the turbo so I wouldn't be holding out for me to be contributing huge numbers!

Pgibbo, get your finger out. Make it happen. :)

Giving something up - no drinking red wine
Taking something up - start drinking white wine

Sounds great. If it’s a ridiculous idea you can count me in.

Right Pancake Tuesday is next week, so get some pledges in!
I can't create tables with work notebook access so be grateful if someone could open a simple one?

Name | What you are giving up | days/45 lasted

Some contenders for "taking something up"
    A plank every day
Drink red wine everyday - good man Tunney
    100,000m vertical group effort

    Other silly suggestions for Lent!
Shoulder pressing your Turbo trainer x20 before and after every session (with or without the bike on it!)
2 minutes of some variation of plank per day or a minute twice a day
Give up coffee or the beverage you drink most (water n/a obviously)
Avoid using the word swim, bike or run in your logs
Take 10 full deep breaths once a day, everyday
    Etc...

Ok - preserves = sweet stuff you put on your toast or in your porridge etc..
I have honey on porridge most days
Marmalade or honey on toast afterwards
Jam and peanut butter on toast later

Nothing wrong with honey, just trying to kill the sweet tooth. Might make me just put more fruit in or add cinnamon etc..

ah okay. i'm a big fan of honey, use it in my porridge every morning. i don't use jam, even though my mother makes killer home made stuff,it's a treat once a month or so. but i use honey instead of sugar/other sweetener in my porridge and a small bit with peanut butter and banana on brown toast.

i was jsut curious as to why you'd lump it in with jam, which is essentially 50% added sugar, i wouldn't see them as equals in unhealthy at all

They are not. I have honey on peanut butter and toast too. Its my sweetener of choice. Same here, the ma makes killer jam and Caz brings home the best brown tin loaf most days so I could easily cut and eat half of it with butter and jam while chatting
