Snow wetting the ground ah here

The radar is a better judge of how the front is moving though, and the front looks beefier with higher clouds near the back in that satellite image. That doesn't mean they'll dump much though and it's unfortunate for snow lovers in Dublin. Any stalling of the front looks more likely further south or north.

Over here there's plenty of adiabatic cooling going on which is great for low temperatures but not so good for precipitation.

Front is currently lying from W.Cork to N. Donegal. If you look at the met eireann radar sequence, you'll see that there is more prep developing just ahead of it (or on the back of the main prep band).

    Rain here, south Dublin.

Meh. I'm out. Going to bed. Not a chance of that sticking

Light what looks like sleet/wet snow in D11. There is a very light covering on the car and on patio table but not on the patio or drive. It's 0.8/-1.4C.

Belting down snow south laois sticking to everything except the road which is very wet now. Lethal tomorrow if it freezes over that.

After two hours of non sticking wet snow /rain ...it's back misting rain outside cork city ....

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,360 ✭✭✭lolie

Exactly an inch on the car roof now.
Surely if snizzle is a word then snist must be as well.
What's falling now is like a mist only it's snow, although any wetter and it's falling as rain :(

Looks like we are getting lucky in Dublin 8 and missing the worst of it. Pretty cold all the same.

It's a thin band and moving that bit more quickly than the leading edge precipitation. There might be up to a half hours worth of more moderate snow. The Meteociel radar seems to have more granularity for this than the met Éireann one, especially as it can use the Met Office radar in NI.

Folks, the rain radar on ME shows the precipitation as very light and moving through quickly......is there another front after that? IS THIS IT?!!!!!!! If so, what a let down........

The highest probability for cold Winters is around or after solar minimum like 1985 to 1987, 1995/1996, 2008-2010, 1976-79 etc.

It does look moderately encouraging on radar, the last half hour has seen some beefing up of the returns and "backbuilding" of returns indicating wider saturation of lower levels has begun, and while not capable of producing a squall line as poster was asking, there is a bit of convergence showing up now, the front has passed through an area of less favourable uppers and is beginning to make contact with the deeper cold air mass that seeped into east coast from Britain. There's still some chance of a decent outcome here like 2-3 cm at lower elevations and 3-5 cm on higher ground. Now to 0200h will be the best dynamics we get from this. An event like this is always going to have a weakish start as dry lower levels get slowly saturated (RobertKK who is a bit higher up was getting a better production rate at what I assume is about 300m).
