Paint stairs

Hi I would to change the colour of my stairs at the moment I have a pine stairs railing I hate it , I can only paint the railing as it's not soild wood underneath, I would love a dark colour railing or dark and white , any tips as I would prob have to do it myself , is it hard to do , all tips appreciated
